He will forgive you your sins and spare you until your appointed time––when God’s appointed time arrives it cannot be postponed. If only you understood!’

قَالَHe said رَبِّMy Lord إِنِّىIndeed, I دَعَوْتُinvited قَوْمِىmy people لَيْلًۭاnight وَنَهَارًۭاand day٥

He said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day,

فَلَمْBut not يَزِدْهُمْincreased them دُعَآءِىٓmy invitation إِلَّاexcept فِرَارًۭا(in) flight٦

but the more I call them, the further they run away:

وَإِنِّىAnd indeed, I كُلَّمَاevery time دَعَوْتُهُمْI invited them لِتَغْفِرَthat You may forgive لَهُمْthem جَعَلُوٓا۟they put أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْtheir fingers فِىٓin ءَاذَانِهِمْtheir ears وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟and covered themselves ثِيَابَهُمْ(with) their garments وَأَصَرُّوا۟and persisted وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟and were arrogant ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭا(with) pride٧

every time I call them, so that You may forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, cover their heads with their garments, persist in their rejection, and grow more insolent and arrogant.

ثُمَّThen إِنِّىindeed, I دَعَوْتُهُمْinvited them جِهَارًۭاpublicly٨

I have tried calling them openly.

ثُمَّThen إِنِّىٓindeed, I أَعْلَنتُannounced لَهُمْto them وَأَسْرَرْتُand I confided لَهُمْto them إِسْرَارًۭاsecretly٩

I have tried preaching to them in public and speaking to them in private.

فَقُلْتُThen I said ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟Ask forgiveness رَبَّكُمْ(from) your Lord إِنَّهُۥIndeed, He كَانَis غَفَّارًۭاOft-Forgiving١٠

I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord: He is ever forgiving.

يُرْسِلِHe will send down ٱلسَّمَآءَ(rain from) the sky عَلَيْكُمupon you مِّدْرَارًۭا(in) abundance١١

He will send down abundant rain from the sky for you;

وَيُمْدِدْكُمAnd provide you بِأَمْوَٰلٍۢwith wealth وَبَنِينَand children وَيَجْعَلand make لَّكُمْfor you جَنَّـٰتٍۢgardens وَيَجْعَلand make لَّكُمْfor you أَنْهَـٰرًۭاrivers١٢

He will give you wealth and sons; He will provide you with gardens and rivers.

مَّاWhat لَكُمْ(is) for you لَاnot تَرْجُونَyou attribute لِلَّهِto Allah وَقَارًۭاgrandeur١٣

What is the matter with you? Why will you not fear God’s majesty,

وَقَدْAnd indeed خَلَقَكُمْHe created you أَطْوَارًا(in) stages١٤

when He has created you stage by stage?

أَلَمْDo not تَرَوْا۟you see كَيْفَhow خَلَقَdid create ٱللَّهُAllah سَبْعَ(the) seven سَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢheavens طِبَاقًۭا(in) layers١٥

Have you ever wondered how God created seven heavens, one above the other,

وَجَعَلَAnd made ٱلْقَمَرَthe moon فِيهِنَّtherein نُورًۭاa light وَجَعَلَand made ٱلشَّمْسَthe sun سِرَاجًۭاa lamp١٦

placed the moon as a light in them and the sun as a lamp,

وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah أَنۢبَتَكُمhas caused you to grow مِّنَfrom ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth نَبَاتًۭا(as) a growth١٧

how God made you spring forth from the earth like a plant,

ثُمَّThen يُعِيدُكُمْHe will return you فِيهَاinto it وَيُخْرِجُكُمْand bring you forth إِخْرَاجًۭا(a new) bringing forth١٨

how He will return you into it and then bring you out again,

وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah جَعَلَmade لَكُمُfor you ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth بِسَاطًۭاan expanse١٩

and how He has spread the Earth out for you

لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟That you may go along مِنْهَاtherein سُبُلًۭا(in) paths فِجَاجًۭاwide٢٠

to walk along its spacious paths?” ’

قَالَSaid نُوحٌۭNuh رَّبِّMy Lord إِنَّهُمْIndeed, they عَصَوْنِىdisobeyed me وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟and followed مَن(the one) who لَّمْ(did) not يَزِدْهُincrease him مَالُهُۥhis wealth وَوَلَدُهُۥٓand his children إِلَّاexcept خَسَارًۭا(in) loss٢١

Noah said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose riches and children only increase their ruin;

وَمَكَرُوا۟And they have planned مَكْرًۭاa plan كُبَّارًۭاgreat٢٢

who have made a grand plan,

وَقَالُوا۟And they said لَا(Do) not تَذَرُنَّleave ءَالِهَتَكُمْyour gods وَلَاand (do) not تَذَرُنَّleave وَدًّۭاWadd وَلَاand not سُوَاعًۭاSuwa وَلَاand not يَغُوثَYaguth وَيَعُوقَand Yauq وَنَسْرًۭاand Nasr٢٣

saying, “Do not renounce your gods! Do not renounce Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Yauq, or Nasr!”

وَقَدْAnd indeed أَضَلُّوا۟they have led astray كَثِيرًۭا ۖmany وَلَاAnd not تَزِدِincrease ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoers إِلَّاexcept ضَلَـٰلًۭا(in) error٢٤

They have led many astray. Lord, bring nothing but destruction down on the evildoers!’

مِّمَّاBecause of خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْtheir sins أُغْرِقُوا۟they were drowned فَأُدْخِلُوا۟then made to enter نَارًۭا(the) Fire فَلَمْand not يَجِدُوا۟they found لَهُمfor themselves مِّنfrom دُونِbesides ٱللَّهِAllah أَنصَارًۭاany helpers٢٥

They were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings: they found no one to help them against God.

وَقَالَAnd said نُوحٌۭNuh رَّبِّMy Lord لَا(Do) not تَذَرْleave عَلَىon ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth مِنَany ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ(of) the disbelievers دَيَّارًا(as) an inhabitant٢٦

And Noah said, ‘Lord, do not leave any of the disbelievers on the earth-

إِنَّكَIndeed, You إِنif تَذَرْهُمْYou leave them يُضِلُّوا۟they will mislead عِبَادَكَYour slaves وَلَاand not يَلِدُوٓا۟they will beget إِلَّاexcept فَاجِرًۭاa wicked كَفَّارًۭاa disbeliever٢٧

if you leave them they will lead Your servants astray and beget only sinners and disbelievers-

رَّبِّMy Lord ٱغْفِرْForgive لِىme وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّand my parents وَلِمَنand whoever دَخَلَenters بَيْتِىَmy house مُؤْمِنًۭاa believer وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَand the believing men وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِand the believing women وَلَاAnd (do) not تَزِدِincrease ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoers إِلَّاexcept تَبَارًۢا(in) destruction٢٨

Lord, forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer. Forgive believing men and women but bring nothing but ruin down on the evildoers!’
