بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

يا أيها الناس خافوا الله والتزموا أوامره، واجتنبوا نواهيه; فهو الذي خلقكم من نفس واحدة هي آدم عليه السلام، وخلق منها زوجها وهي حواء، ونشر منهما في أنحاء الأرض رجالا كثيرًا ونساء كثيرات، وراقبوا الله الذي يَسْأل به بعضكم بعضًا، واحذروا أن تقطعوا أرحامكم. إن الله مراقب لجميع أحوالكم.

وَءَاتُوا۟And give ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰٓ(to) the orphans أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ ۖtheir wealth وَلَاand (do) not تَتَبَدَّلُوا۟exchange ٱلْخَبِيثَthe bad بِٱلطَّيِّبِ ۖwith the good وَلَاand (do) not تَأْكُلُوٓا۟consume أَمْوَٰلَهُمْtheir wealth إِلَىٰٓwith أَمْوَٰلِكُمْ ۚyour wealth إِنَّهُۥIndeed, it كَانَis حُوبًۭاa sin كَبِيرًۭاgreat٢

وأعطوا مَن مات آباؤهم وهم دون البلوغ، -وكنتم عليهم أوصياء- أموالهم إذا وصلوا سن البلوغ، ورأيتم منهم قدرة على حفظ أموالهم، ولا تأخذوا الجيِّد من أموالهم، وتجعلوا مكانه الرديء من أموالكم، ولا تخلطوا أموالهم بأموالكم; لتحتالوا بذلك على أكل أموالهم. إن من تجرأ على ذلك فقد ارتكب إثمًا عظيمًا.

وإن خفتم ألا تعدلوا في يتامى النساء اللاتي تحت أيديكم بأن لا تعطوهن مهورهن كغيرهن، فاتركوهن وانكحوا ما طاب لكم من النساء من غيرهن: اثنتين أو ثلاثًا أو أربعًا، فإن خشيتم ألا تعدلوا بينهن فاكتفوا بواحدة، أو بما عندكم من الإماء. ذلك الذي شرعته لكم في اليتيمات والزواج من واحدة إلى أربع، أو الاقتصار على واحدة أو ملك اليمين، أقرب إلى عدم الجَوْرِ والتعدي.

وَءَاتُوا۟And give ٱلنِّسَآءَthe women صَدُقَـٰتِهِنَّtheir dower نِحْلَةًۭ ۚgraciously فَإِنBut if طِبْنَthey remit لَكُمْto you عَنof شَىْءٍۢanything مِّنْهُof it نَفْسًۭا(on their) own فَكُلُوهُthen eat it هَنِيٓـًۭٔا(in) satisfaction مَّرِيٓـًۭٔا(and) ease٤

وأعطوا -أيها الأزواج- النساء مهورهن، عطية واجبة وفريضة لازمة عن طيب نفس منكم. فإن طابت أنفسهن لكم عن شيء من المهر فوهَبْنه لكم فخذوه، وتصرَّفوا فيه، فهو حلال طيب.

وَلَاAnd (do) not تُؤْتُوا۟give ٱلسُّفَهَآءَthe foolish أَمْوَٰلَكُمُyour wealth ٱلَّتِىwhich جَعَلَ(was) made ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah لَكُمْfor you قِيَـٰمًۭاa means of support وَٱرْزُقُوهُمْ(but) provide (for) them فِيهَاwith it وَٱكْسُوهُمْand clothe them وَقُولُوا۟and speak لَهُمْto them قَوْلًۭاwords مَّعْرُوفًۭا(of) kindness٥

ولا تؤتوا -أيها الأولياء- من يُبَذِّر من الرجال والنساء والصبيان أموالهم التي تحت أيديكم فيضعوها في غير وجهها، فهذه الأموال هي التي عليها قيام حياة الناس، وأنفقوا عليهم منها واكسوهم، وقولوا لهم قولا معروفًا من الكلام الطيب والخلق الحسن.

وَٱبْتَلُوا۟And test ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰthe orphans حَتَّىٰٓuntil إِذَا[when]بَلَغُوا۟they reach[ed]ٱلنِّكَاحَ(the age of) marriage فَإِنْthen if ءَانَسْتُمyou perceive مِّنْهُمْin them رُشْدًۭاsound judgement فَٱدْفَعُوٓا۟then deliver إِلَيْهِمْto them أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ ۖtheir wealth وَلَاAnd (do) not تَأْكُلُوهَآeat it إِسْرَافًۭاextravagantly وَبِدَارًاand hastily أَن(fearing) that يَكْبَرُوا۟ ۚthey will grow up وَمَنAnd whoever كَانَis غَنِيًّۭاrich فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْ ۖthen he should refrain وَمَنand whoever كَانَis فَقِيرًۭاpoor فَلْيَأْكُلْthen let him eat (of it)بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ ۚin a fair manner فَإِذَاThen when دَفَعْتُمْyou deliver إِلَيْهِمْto them أَمْوَٰلَهُمْtheir wealth فَأَشْهِدُوا۟then take witnesses عَلَيْهِمْ ۚon them وَكَفَىٰAnd is sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah حَسِيبًۭا(as) a Reckoner٦

واختبروا مَن تحت أيديكم من اليتامى لمعرفة قدرتهم على حسن التصرف في أموالهم، حتى إذا وصلوا إلى سن البلوغ، وعَلمتم منهم صلاحًا في دينهم، وقدرة على حفظ أموالهم، فسلِّموها لهم، ولا تعتدوا عليها بإنفاقها في غير موضعها إسرافًا ومبادرة لأكلها قبل أن يأخذوها منكم. ومَن كان صاحب مال منكم فليستعفف بغناه، ولا يأخذ من مال اليتيم شيئًا، ومن كان فقيرًا فليأخذ بقدر حاجته عند الضرورة. فإذا علمتم أنهم قادرون على حفظ أموالهم بعد بلوغهم الحُلُم وسلمتموها إليهم، فأَشْهِدوا عليهم; ضمانًا لوصول حقهم كاملا إليهم; لئلا ينكروا ذلك. ويكفيكم أن الله شاهد عليكم، ومحاسب لكم على ما فعلتم.

لِّلرِّجَالِFor the men نَصِيبٌۭa portion مِّمَّاof what تَرَكَ(is) left ٱلْوَٰلِدَانِ(by) the parents وَٱلْأَقْرَبُونَand the near relatives وَلِلنِّسَآءِand for the women نَصِيبٌۭa portion مِّمَّاof what تَرَكَ(is) left ٱلْوَٰلِدَانِ(by) parents وَٱلْأَقْرَبُونَand the near relatives مِمَّاof what قَلَّ(is) little مِنْهُof it أَوْor كَثُرَ ۚmuch نَصِيبًۭاa portion مَّفْرُوضًۭاobligatory٧

للذكور -صغارًا أو كبارًا- نصيب شرعه الله فيما تركه الوالدان والأقربون من المال، قليلا كان أو كثيرًا، في أنصبة محددة واضحة فرضها الله عز وجل لهؤلاء، وللنساء كذلك.

وَإِذَاAnd when حَضَرَpresent ٱلْقِسْمَةَ(at) the (time of) division أُو۟لُوا۟(of)ٱلْقُرْبَىٰthe relatives وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰand the orphans وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينُand the poor فَٱرْزُقُوهُمthen provide them مِّنْهُfrom it وَقُولُوا۟and speak لَهُمْto them قَوْلًۭاwords مَّعْرُوفًۭا(of) kindness٨

وإذا حضر قسمةَ الميراث أقاربُ الميت ممن لا حقَّ لهم في التركة، أو حضرها من مات آباؤهم وهم صغار دون سن البلوغ، أو مَن لا يملكون ما يكفيهم ويسد حاجتهم فأعطوهم شيئًا من المال على وجه الاستحباب قبل تقسيم التركة على أصحابها، وقولوا لهم قولا حسنًا غير فاحش ولا قبيح.

وَلْيَخْشَAnd let fear ٱلَّذِينَthose who لَوْif تَرَكُوا۟they left مِنْfrom خَلْفِهِمْbehind ذُرِّيَّةًۭoffspring ضِعَـٰفًاweak خَافُوا۟(and) they would have feared عَلَيْهِمْabout them فَلْيَتَّقُوا۟So let them fear ٱللَّهَAllah وَلْيَقُولُوا۟and let them speak قَوْلًۭاwords سَدِيدًاappropriate٩

ولْيَخَفِ الذين لو ماتوا وتركوا من خلفهم أبناء صغارًا ضعافًا خافوا عليهم الظلم والضياع، فليراقبوا الله فيمن تحت أيديهم من اليتامى وغيرهم، وذلك بحفظ أموالهم، وحسن تربيتهم، ودَفْع الأذى عنهم، وليقولوا لهم قولا موافقا للعدل والمعروف.

إِنَّIndeed ٱلَّذِينَthose who يَأْكُلُونَconsume أَمْوَٰلَwealth ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ(of) the orphans ظُلْمًاwrongfully إِنَّمَاonly يَأْكُلُونَthey consume فِىin بُطُونِهِمْtheir bellies نَارًۭا ۖfire وَسَيَصْلَوْنَand they will be burned سَعِيرًۭا(in) a Blazing Fire١٠

إن الذين يعْتَدون على أموال اليتامى، فيأخذونها بغير حق، إنما يأكلون نارًا تتأجّج في بطونهم يوم القيامة، وسيدخلون نارا يقاسون حرَّها.

يُوصِيكُمُInstructs you ٱللَّهُAllah فِىٓconcerning أَوْلَـٰدِكُمْ ۖyour children لِلذَّكَرِfor the male مِثْلُlike حَظِّ(the) portion ٱلْأُنثَيَيْنِ ۚ(of) two females فَإِنBut if كُنَّthere are نِسَآءًۭ(only) women فَوْقَmore (than)ٱثْنَتَيْنِtwo فَلَهُنَّthen for them ثُلُثَاtwo thirds مَا(of) what تَرَكَ ۖhe left وَإِنAnd if كَانَتْ(there) is وَٰحِدَةًۭ(only) one فَلَهَاthen for her ٱلنِّصْفُ ۚ(is) half وَلِأَبَوَيْهِAnd for his parents لِكُلِّfor each وَٰحِدٍۢone مِّنْهُمَاof them ٱلسُّدُسُa sixth مِمَّاof what تَرَكَ(is) left إِنif كَانَis لَهُۥfor him وَلَدٌۭ ۚa child فَإِنBut if لَّمْnot يَكُنis لَّهُۥfor him وَلَدٌۭany child وَوَرِثَهُۥٓand inherit[ed] him أَبَوَاهُhis parents فَلِأُمِّهِthen for his mother ٱلثُّلُثُ ۚ(is) one third فَإِنAnd if كَانَare لَهُۥٓfor him إِخْوَةٌۭbrothers and sisters فَلِأُمِّهِthen for his mother ٱلسُّدُسُ ۚ(is) the sixth مِنۢfrom بَعْدِafter وَصِيَّةٍۢany will يُوصِىhe has made بِهَآ[of which]أَوْor دَيْنٍ ۗany debt ءَابَآؤُكُمْYour parents وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْand your children لَاnot تَدْرُونَyou know أَيُّهُمْwhich of them أَقْرَبُ(is) nearer لَكُمْto you نَفْعًۭا ۚ(in) benefit فَرِيضَةًۭAn obligation مِّنَfrom ٱللَّهِ ۗAllah إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَلِيمًاAll-Knowing حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise١١

Concerning your children, God commands you that a son should have the equivalent share of two daughters. If there are only daughters, two or more should share two-thirds of the inheritance, if one, she should have half. Parents inherit a sixth each if the deceased leaves children; if he leaves no children and his parents are his sole heirs, his mother has a third, unless he has brothers, in which case she has a sixth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. You cannot know which of your parents or your children is more beneficial to you: this is a law from God, and He is all knowing, all wise.

۞ وَلَكُمْAnd for you نِصْفُ(is) half مَا(of) what تَرَكَ(is) left أَزْوَٰجُكُمْby your wives إِنif لَّمْnot يَكُنis لَّهُنَّfor them وَلَدٌۭ ۚa child فَإِنBut if كَانَis لَهُنَّfor them وَلَدٌۭa child فَلَكُمُthen for you ٱلرُّبُعُ(is) the fourth مِمَّاof what تَرَكْنَ ۚthey left مِنۢfrom بَعْدِafter وَصِيَّةٍۢany will يُوصِينَthey have made بِهَآ[for which]أَوْor دَيْنٍۢ ۚany debt وَلَهُنَّAnd for them ٱلرُّبُعُ(is) the fourth مِمَّاof what تَرَكْتُمْyou left إِنif لَّمْnot يَكُنis لَّكُمْfor you وَلَدٌۭ ۚa child فَإِنBut if كَانَis لَكُمْfor you وَلَدٌۭa child فَلَهُنَّthen for them ٱلثُّمُنُ(is) the eighth مِمَّاof what تَرَكْتُم ۚyou left مِّنۢfrom بَعْدِafter وَصِيَّةٍۢany will تُوصُونَyou have made بِهَآ[for which]أَوْor دَيْنٍۢ ۗany debt وَإِنAnd if كَانَ[is]رَجُلٌۭa man يُورَثُ(whose wealth) is to be inherited كَلَـٰلَةً(has) no parent or child أَوِor ٱمْرَأَةٌۭa women وَلَهُۥٓand for him أَخٌ(is) a brother أَوْor أُخْتٌۭa sister فَلِكُلِّthen for each وَٰحِدٍۢone مِّنْهُمَاof (the) two ٱلسُّدُسُ ۚ(is) the sixth فَإِنBut if كَانُوٓا۟they are أَكْثَرَmore مِنthan ذَٰلِكَthat فَهُمْthen they شُرَكَآءُ(are) partners فِىin ٱلثُّلُثِ ۚthe third مِنۢfrom بَعْدِafter وَصِيَّةٍۢany will يُوصَىٰwas made بِهَآ[for which]أَوْor دَيْنٍany debt غَيْرَwithout مُضَآرٍّۢ ۚ(being) harmful وَصِيَّةًۭAn ordinance مِّنَfrom ٱللَّهِ ۗAllah وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah عَلِيمٌ(is) All-Knowing حَلِيمٌۭAll-Forbearing١٢

You inherit half of what your wives leave, if they have no children; if they have children, you inherit a quarter. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If you have no children, your wives’ share is a quarter; if you have children, your wives get an eighth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If a man or a woman dies leaving no children or parents, but a single brother or sister, he or she should take one-sixth of the inheritance; if there are more siblings, they share one-third between them. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts, with no harm done to anyone: this is a commandment from God: God is all knowing and benign to all.

تِلْكَThese حُدُودُ(are the) limits ٱللَّهِ ۚ(of) Allah وَمَنand whoever يُطِعِobeys ٱللَّهَAllah وَرَسُولَهُۥand His Messenger يُدْخِلْهُHe will admit him جَنَّـٰتٍۢ(to) Gardens تَجْرِىflows مِنfrom تَحْتِهَاunderneath them ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُthe rivers خَـٰلِدِينَ(will) abide forever فِيهَا ۚin it وَذَٰلِكَAnd that ٱلْفَوْزُ(is) the success ٱلْعَظِيمُ[the] great١٣

These are the bounds set by God: God will admit those who obey Him and His Messenger to Gardens graced with flowing streams, and there they will stay- that is the supreme triumph!

وَمَنAnd whoever يَعْصِdisobeys ٱللَّهَAllah وَرَسُولَهُۥand His Messenger وَيَتَعَدَّand transgresses حُدُودَهُۥHis limits يُدْخِلْهُHe will admit him نَارًا(to) Fire خَـٰلِدًۭا(will) abide forever فِيهَاin it وَلَهُۥAnd for him عَذَابٌۭ(is) a punishment مُّهِينٌۭhumiliating١٤

But those who disobey God and His Messenger and overstep His limits will be consigned by God to the Fire, and there they will stay- a humiliating torment awaits them!

If any of your women commit a lewd act, call four witnesses from among you, then, if they testify to their guilt, keep the women at home until death comes to them or until God shows them another way.

وَٱلَّذَانِAnd the two who يَأْتِيَـٰنِهَاcommit it مِنكُمْamong you فَـَٔاذُوهُمَا ۖthen punish both of them فَإِنBut if تَابَاthey repent وَأَصْلَحَاand correct themselves فَأَعْرِضُوا۟then turn away عَنْهُمَآ ۗfrom both of them إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis تَوَّابًۭاOft-Forgiving رَّحِيمًاMost-Merciful١٦

If two men commit a lewd act, punish them both; if they repent and mend their ways, leave them alone- God is always ready to accept repentance, He is full of mercy.

But God only undertakes to accept repentance from those who do evil out of ignorance and soon afterwards repent: these are the ones God will forgive, He is all knowing, all wise.

It is not true repentance when people continue to do evil until death confronts them and then say, ‘Now I repent,’ nor when they die defiant: We have prepared a painful torment for these.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you ٱلَّذِينَwho ءَامَنُوا۟believe[d]لَاNot يَحِلُّ(is) lawful لَكُمْfor you أَنthat تَرِثُوا۟you inherit ٱلنِّسَآءَthe women كَرْهًۭا ۖ(by) force وَلَاAnd not تَعْضُلُوهُنَّyou constraint them لِتَذْهَبُوا۟so that you may take بِبَعْضِa part مَآ(of) what ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّyou have given them إِلَّآexcept أَنthat يَأْتِينَthey commit بِفَـٰحِشَةٍۢimmorality مُّبَيِّنَةٍۢ ۚopen وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّAnd live with them بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ ۚin kindness فَإِنBut if كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّyou dislike them فَعَسَىٰٓthen perhaps أَنthat تَكْرَهُوا۟you dislike شَيْـًۭٔاa thing وَيَجْعَلَand has placed ٱللَّهُAllah فِيهِin it خَيْرًۭاgood كَثِيرًۭاmuch١٩

You who believe, it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, nor should you treat your wives harshly, hoping to take back some of the bride-gift you gave them, unless they are guilty of something clearly outrageous. Live with them in accordance with what is fair and kind: if you dislike them, it may well be that you dislike something in which God has put much good.

وَإِنْAnd if أَرَدتُّمُyou intend ٱسْتِبْدَالَreplacing زَوْجٍۢa wife مَّكَانَ(in) place زَوْجٍۢ(of) a wife وَءَاتَيْتُمْand you have given إِحْدَىٰهُنَّone of them قِنطَارًۭاheap (of gold)فَلَاthen (do) not تَأْخُذُوا۟take away مِنْهُfrom it شَيْـًٔا ۚanything أَتَأْخُذُونَهُۥWould you take it بُهْتَـٰنًۭا(by) slander وَإِثْمًۭاand a sin مُّبِينًۭاopen٢٠

If you wish to replace one wife with another, do not take any of her bride-gift back, even if you have given her a great amount of gold.

وَكَيْفَAnd how تَأْخُذُونَهُۥcould you take it وَقَدْwhen surely أَفْضَىٰhas gone بَعْضُكُمْone of you إِلَىٰto بَعْضٍۢanother وَأَخَذْنَand they have taken مِنكُمfrom you مِّيثَـٰقًاcovenant غَلِيظًۭاstrong٢١

How could you take it when this is unjust and a blatant sin? How could you take it when you have lain with each other and they have taken a solemn pledge from you?

وَلَاAnd (do) not تَنكِحُوا۟marry مَاwhom نَكَحَmarried ءَابَآؤُكُمyour fathers مِّنَof ٱلنِّسَآءِthe women إِلَّاexcept مَاwhat قَدْhas سَلَفَ ۚpassed before إِنَّهُۥindeed it كَانَwas فَـٰحِشَةًۭan immorality وَمَقْتًۭاand hateful وَسَآءَand (an) evil سَبِيلًاway٢٢

Do not marry women that your fathers married- with the exception of what is past- this is indeed a shameful thing to do, loathsome and leading to evil.

حُرِّمَتْForbidden عَلَيْكُمْto you أُمَّهَـٰتُكُمْ(are) your mothers وَبَنَاتُكُمْand your daughters وَأَخَوَٰتُكُمْand your sisters وَعَمَّـٰتُكُمْand your father's sisters وَخَـٰلَـٰتُكُمْand your mother's sisters وَبَنَاتُand daughters ٱلْأَخِ(of) brothers وَبَنَاتُand daughters ٱلْأُخْتِ(of) sisters وَأُمَّهَـٰتُكُمُand (the) mothers ٱلَّـٰتِىٓwho أَرْضَعْنَكُمْnursed you وَأَخَوَٰتُكُمand your sisters مِّنَfrom ٱلرَّضَـٰعَةِthe nursing وَأُمَّهَـٰتُand mothers نِسَآئِكُمْ(of) your wives وَرَبَـٰٓئِبُكُمُand your step daughters ٱلَّـٰتِىwho فِى(are) in حُجُورِكُمyour guardianship مِّنof نِّسَآئِكُمُyour women ٱلَّـٰتِىwhom دَخَلْتُمyou had relations بِهِنَّwith them فَإِنbut if لَّمْnot تَكُونُوا۟you had دَخَلْتُمrelations بِهِنَّwith them فَلَاthen (there is) no جُنَاحَsin عَلَيْكُمْon you وَحَلَـٰٓئِلُAnd wives أَبْنَآئِكُمُ(of) your sons ٱلَّذِينَthose who مِنْ(are) from أَصْلَـٰبِكُمْyour loins وَأَنand that تَجْمَعُوا۟you gather together بَيْنَ[between]ٱلْأُخْتَيْنِtwo sisters إِلَّاexcept مَاwhat قَدْhas سَلَفَ ۗpassed before إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgiving رَّحِيمًۭاMost-Merciful٢٣

You are forbidden to take as wives your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, the daughters of brothers and daughters of sisters, your milk-mothers and milk-sisters, your wives’ mothers, the stepdaughters in your care- those born of women with whom you have consummated marriage, if you have not consummated the marriage, then you will not be blamed- wives of your begotten sons, two sisters simultaneously- with the exception of what is past: God is most forgiving and merciful-

۞ وَٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتُAnd (prohibited are) the ones who are married مِنَof ٱلنِّسَآءِthe women إِلَّاexcept مَاwhom مَلَكَتْyou possess أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ ۖrightfully كِتَـٰبَDecree ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah عَلَيْكُمْ ۚupon you وَأُحِلَّAnd are lawful لَكُمto you مَّاwhat وَرَآءَ(is) beyond ذَٰلِكُمْthat أَنthat تَبْتَغُوا۟you seek بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمwith your wealth مُّحْصِنِينَdesiring to be chaste غَيْرَnot مُسَـٰفِحِينَ ۚ(to be) lustful فَمَاSo what ٱسْتَمْتَعْتُمyou benefit[ed]بِهِۦof it مِنْهُنَّfrom them فَـَٔاتُوهُنَّso you give them أُجُورَهُنَّtheir bridal due فَرِيضَةًۭ ۚ(as) an obligation وَلَاAnd (there is) no جُنَاحَsin عَلَيْكُمْon you فِيمَاconcerning what تَرَٰضَيْتُمyou mutually agree بِهِۦof it مِنۢfrom بَعْدِbeyond ٱلْفَرِيضَةِ ۚthe obligation إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَلِيمًاAll-Knowing حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise٢٤

women already married, other than your slaves.God has ordained all this for you. Other women are lawful to you, so long as you seek them in marriage, with gifts from your property, looking for wedlock rather than fornication. If you wish to enjoy women through marriage, give them their bride-gift- this is obligatory- though if you should choose mutually, after fulfilling this obligation, to do otherwise [with the bride-gift], you will not be blamed: God is all knowing and all wise.

وَمَنAnd whoever لَّمْ(is) not يَسْتَطِعْable to مِنكُمْamong you طَوْلًاafford أَنto يَنكِحَmarry ٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِthe free chaste ٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ[the] believing women فَمِنthen (marry) from مَّاwhat مَلَكَتْpossess[ed]أَيْمَـٰنُكُمyour right hands مِّنof فَتَيَـٰتِكُمُyour slave girls ٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ۚ(of) the believers وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah أَعْلَمُknows best بِإِيمَـٰنِكُم ۚabout your faith بَعْضُكُمYou مِّنۢ(are) from بَعْضٍۢ ۚ(one) another فَٱنكِحُوهُنَّSo marry them بِإِذْنِwith (the) permission أَهْلِهِنَّ(of) their family وَءَاتُوهُنَّand give them أُجُورَهُنَّtheir bridal due بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِin a fair manner مُحْصَنَـٰتٍ(They should be) chaste غَيْرَnot مُسَـٰفِحَـٰتٍۢthose who commit immorality وَلَاand not مُتَّخِذَٰتِthose who take أَخْدَانٍۢ ۚsecret lovers فَإِذَآThen when أُحْصِنَّthey are married فَإِنْand if أَتَيْنَthey commit بِفَـٰحِشَةٍۢadultery فَعَلَيْهِنَّthen for them نِصْفُ(is) half مَا(of) what عَلَى(is) on ٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِthe free chaste women مِنَof ٱلْعَذَابِ ۚthe punishment ذَٰلِكَThat لِمَنْ(is) for whoever خَشِىَfears ٱلْعَنَتَcommitting sin مِنكُمْ ۚamong you وَأَنand that تَصْبِرُوا۟you be patient خَيْرٌۭ(is) better لَّكُمْ ۗfor you وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah غَفُورٌۭ(is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭMost Merciful٢٥

If any of you does not have the means to marry a believing free woman, then marry a believing slave- God knows best [the depth of] your faith: you are [all] part of the same family- so marry them with their people’s consent and their proper bride-gifts. [Make them] married women, not adulteresses or lovers. If they commit adultery when they are married, their punishment will be half that of free women. This is for those of you who fear that you will sin; it is better for you to practise selfrestraint. God is most forgiving and merciful,

يُرِيدُWishes ٱللَّهُAllah لِيُبَيِّنَto make clear لَكُمْto you وَيَهْدِيَكُمْand to guide you سُنَنَ(to) ways ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those مِنfrom قَبْلِكُمْbefore you وَيَتُوبَand (to) accept repentance عَلَيْكُمْ ۗfrom you وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah عَلِيمٌ(is) All-Knowing حَكِيمٌۭAll-Wise٢٦

He wishes to make His laws clear to you and guide you to the righteous ways of those who went before you. He wishes to turn towards you in mercy- He is all knowing, all wise-

وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah يُرِيدُwishes أَنto يَتُوبَaccept repentance عَلَيْكُمْfrom you وَيُرِيدُbut wish ٱلَّذِينَthose who يَتَّبِعُونَfollow ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِthe passions أَنthat تَمِيلُوا۟you deviate مَيْلًا(into) a deviation عَظِيمًۭاgreat٢٧

He wishes to turn towards you, but those who follow their lusts want you to go far astray.

يُرِيدُWishes ٱللَّهُAllah أَنto يُخَفِّفَlighten عَنكُمْ ۚfor you وَخُلِقَand was created ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُthe mankind ضَعِيفًۭاweak٢٨

God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak.

You who believe, do not wrongfully consume each other’s wealth but trade by mutual consent. Do not kill each other, for God is merciful to you.

وَمَنAnd whoever يَفْعَلْdoes ذَٰلِكَthat عُدْوَٰنًۭا(in) aggression وَظُلْمًۭاand injustice فَسَوْفَthen soon نُصْلِيهِWe (will) cast him نَارًۭا ۚ(into) a Fire وَكَانَAnd is ذَٰلِكَthat عَلَىfor ٱللَّهِAllah يَسِيرًاeasy٣٠

If any of you does these things, out of hostility and injustice, We shall make him suffer Fire: that is easy for God.

إِنIf تَجْتَنِبُوا۟you avoid كَبَآئِرَgreat (sins)مَا(of) what تُنْهَوْنَyou are forbidden عَنْهُfrom [it]نُكَفِّرْWe will remove عَنكُمْfrom you سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْyour evil deeds وَنُدْخِلْكُمand We will admit you مُّدْخَلًۭا(to) an entrance كَرِيمًۭاnoble٣١

But if you avoid the great sins you have been forbidden, We shall wipe out your minor misdeeds and let you in through the entrance of honour.

Do not covet what God has given to some of you more than others- men have the portion they have earned; and women the portion they have earned- you should rather ask God for some of His bounty: He has full knowledge of everything.

وَلِكُلٍّۢAnd for all جَعَلْنَاWe (have) made مَوَٰلِىَheirs مِمَّاof what تَرَكَ(is) left ٱلْوَٰلِدَانِ(by) the parents وَٱلْأَقْرَبُونَ ۚand the relatives وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whom عَقَدَتْpledged أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْyour right hands فَـَٔاتُوهُمْthen give them نَصِيبَهُمْ ۚtheir share إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَلَىٰover كُلِّevery شَىْءٍۢthing شَهِيدًاa Witness٣٣

We have appointed heirs for everything that parents and close relatives leave behind, including those to whom you have pledged your hands [in marriage], so give them their share: God is witness to everything.

ٱلرِّجَالُ[The] men قَوَّٰمُونَ(are) protectors عَلَىof ٱلنِّسَآءِthe women بِمَاbecause فَضَّلَ(has) bestowed ٱللَّهُAllah بَعْضَهُمْsome of them عَلَىٰover بَعْضٍۢothers وَبِمَآand because أَنفَقُوا۟they spend مِنْfrom أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ ۚtheir wealth فَٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُSo the righteous women قَـٰنِتَـٰتٌ(are) obedient حَـٰفِظَـٰتٌۭguarding لِّلْغَيْبِin the unseen بِمَاthat which حَفِظَ(orders) them to guard ٱللَّهُ ۚ(by) Allah وَٱلَّـٰتِىAnd those (from) whom تَخَافُونَyou fear نُشُوزَهُنَّtheir ill-conduct فَعِظُوهُنَّthen advise them وَٱهْجُرُوهُنَّand forsake them فِىin ٱلْمَضَاجِعِthe bed وَٱضْرِبُوهُنَّ ۖand [finally] strike them فَإِنْThen if أَطَعْنَكُمْthey obey you فَلَاthen (do) not تَبْغُوا۟seek عَلَيْهِنَّagainst them سَبِيلًا ۗa way إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَلِيًّۭاMost High كَبِيرًۭاMost Great٣٤

Husbands should take good care of their wives, with [the bounties] God has given to some more than others and with what they spend out of their own money. Righteous wives are devout and guard what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence. If you fear high-handedness from your wives, remind them [of the teachings of God], then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them.If they obey you, you have no right to act against them: God is most high and great.

If you [believers] fear that a couple may break up, appoint one arbiter from his family and one from hers. Then, if the couple want to put things right, God will bring about a reconciliation between them: He is all knowing, all aware.

۞ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟And worship ٱللَّهَAllah وَلَاAnd (do) not تُشْرِكُوا۟associate بِهِۦwith Him شَيْـًۭٔا ۖanything وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِand to the parents إِحْسَـٰنًۭا(do) good وَبِذِىand with ٱلْقُرْبَىٰthe relatives وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰand the orphans وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِand the needy وَٱلْجَارِand the neighbor ذِى(who is)ٱلْقُرْبَىٰnear وَٱلْجَارِand the neighbor ٱلْجُنُبِ(who is) farther away وَٱلصَّاحِبِand the companion بِٱلْجَنۢبِby your side وَٱبْنِand the ٱلسَّبِيلِtraveler وَمَاand what مَلَكَتْpossess[ed]أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ ۗyour right hands إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah لَا(does) not يُحِبُّlove مَن(the one) who كَانَis مُخْتَالًۭا[a] proud فَخُورًا(and) [a] boastful٣٦

Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,

ٱلَّذِينَThose who يَبْخَلُونَare stingy وَيَأْمُرُونَand order ٱلنَّاسَthe people بِٱلْبُخْلِ[of] stinginess وَيَكْتُمُونَand hide مَآwhat ءَاتَىٰهُمُ(has) given them ٱللَّهُAllah مِنof فَضْلِهِۦ ۗHis Bounty وَأَعْتَدْنَاand We (have) prepared لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers عَذَابًۭاa punishment مُّهِينًۭاhumiliating٣٧

who are miserly and order other people to be the same, hiding the bounty God has given them. We have prepared a humiliating torment for such ungrateful people.

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who يُنفِقُونَspend أَمْوَٰلَهُمْtheir wealth رِئَآءَto be seen ٱلنَّاسِ(by) the people وَلَاand not يُؤْمِنُونَthey believe بِٱللَّهِin Allah وَلَاand not بِٱلْيَوْمِin the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ ۗthe Last وَمَنand whoever يَكُنِhas ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُthe Shaitaan لَهُۥfor him قَرِينًۭا(as) companion فَسَآءَthen evil قَرِينًۭا(is he as) a companion٣٨

[Nor does He like those] who spend their wealth to show off, who do not believe in Him or the Last Day. Whoever has Satan as his companion has an evil companion!

وَمَاذَاAnd what عَلَيْهِمْ(is) against them لَوْif ءَامَنُوا۟they believed بِٱللَّهِin Allah وَٱلْيَوْمِand the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِthe Last وَأَنفَقُوا۟and spent مِمَّاfrom what رَزَقَهُمُ(has) provided them ٱللَّهُ ۚAllah وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah بِهِمْabout them عَلِيمًاAll-Knower٣٩

What harm would it do them to believe in God and the Last Day, and give charitably from the sustenance God has given them? God knows them well.

إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah لَا(does) not يَظْلِمُwrong مِثْقَالَ(as much as) weight ذَرَّةٍۢ ۖ(of) an atom وَإِنAnd if تَكُthere is حَسَنَةًۭa good يُضَـٰعِفْهَاHe doubles it وَيُؤْتِand gives مِنfrom لَّدُنْهُnear Him أَجْرًاa reward عَظِيمًۭاgreat٤٠

He does not wrong anyone by as much as the weight of a speck of dust: He doubles any good deed and gives a tremendous reward of His own.

فَكَيْفَSo how (will it be)إِذَاwhen جِئْنَاWe bring مِنfrom كُلِّevery أُمَّةٍۭnation بِشَهِيدٍۢa witness وَجِئْنَاand We bring بِكَyou عَلَىٰagainst هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِthese (people)شَهِيدًۭا(as) a witness٤١

What will they do when We bring a witness from each community, with you [Muhammad] as a witness against these people?

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ(On) that Day يَوَدُّwill wish ٱلَّذِينَthose who كَفَرُوا۟disbelieved وَعَصَوُا۟and disobeyed ٱلرَّسُولَthe Messenger لَوْif تُسَوَّىٰwas leveled بِهِمُwith them ٱلْأَرْضُthe earth وَلَاand not يَكْتُمُونَthey will (be able to) hide ٱللَّهَ(from) Allah حَدِيثًۭا(any) statement٤٢

On that day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Prophet will wish that the earth could swallow them up: they will not be able to hide anything from God.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you ٱلَّذِينَwho ءَامَنُوا۟believe[d]لَا(Do) not تَقْرَبُوا۟go near ٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayer وَأَنتُمْwhile you سُكَـٰرَىٰ(are) intoxicated حَتَّىٰuntil تَعْلَمُوا۟you know مَاwhat تَقُولُونَyou are saying وَلَاand not جُنُبًا(when you are) impure إِلَّاexcept عَابِرِى(when) passing سَبِيلٍ(through) a way حَتَّىٰuntil تَغْتَسِلُوا۟ ۚyou have bathed وَإِنAnd if كُنتُمyou are مَّرْضَىٰٓill أَوْor عَلَىٰon سَفَرٍa journey أَوْor جَآءَcame أَحَدٌۭone مِّنكُمof you مِّنَfrom ٱلْغَآئِطِthe toilet أَوْor لَـٰمَسْتُمُyou have touched ٱلنِّسَآءَthe women فَلَمْand not تَجِدُوا۟you find مَآءًۭwater فَتَيَمَّمُوا۟then do tayammum صَعِيدًۭا(with) earth طَيِّبًۭاclean فَٱمْسَحُوا۟and wipe (with it)بِوُجُوهِكُمْyour faces وَأَيْدِيكُمْ ۗand your hands إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَفُوًّاOft-Pardoning غَفُورًاOft-Forgiving٤٣

You who believe, do not come anywhere near the prayer if you are intoxicated, not until you know what you are saying; nor if you are in a state of major ritual impurity- though you may pass through the mosque- not until you have bathed; if you are ill, on a journey, have relieved yourselves, or had intercourse, and cannot find any water, then find some clean sand and wipe your faces and hands with it. God is always ready to pardon and forgive.

أَلَمْDid not تَرَyou see إِلَى[towards]ٱلَّذِينَthose who أُوتُوا۟were given نَصِيبًۭاa portion مِّنَof ٱلْكِتَـٰبِthe Book يَشْتَرُونَpurchasing ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةَ[the] error وَيُرِيدُونَand wishing أَنthat تَضِلُّوا۟you stray ٱلسَّبِيلَ(from) the way٤٤

[Prophet], have you not considered how those who were given a share of the Scripture purchase misguidance and want you [believers], too, to lose the right path?

وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah أَعْلَمُknows better بِأَعْدَآئِكُمْ ۚabout your enemies وَكَفَىٰand (is) sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah وَلِيًّۭا(as) a Protector وَكَفَىٰand sufficient بِٱللَّهِ(is) Allah نَصِيرًۭا(as) a Helper٤٥

God knows your enemies best: God is enough to protect and to help you.

مِّنَOf ٱلَّذِينَthose who هَادُوا۟are Jews يُحَرِّفُونَthey distort ٱلْكَلِمَthe words عَنfrom مَّوَاضِعِهِۦtheir places وَيَقُولُونَand they say سَمِعْنَاWe hear[d]وَعَصَيْنَاand we disobey[ed]وَٱسْمَعْand "Hear غَيْرَnot مُسْمَعٍۢto be heard وَرَٰعِنَاand "Raina لَيًّۢاtwisting بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ[with] their tongues وَطَعْنًۭاand defaming فِى[in]ٱلدِّينِ ۚthe religion وَلَوْAnd if أَنَّهُمْ[that] they قَالُوا۟(had) said سَمِعْنَاWe hear[d]وَأَطَعْنَاand we obey[ed]وَٱسْمَعْand "Hear وَٱنظُرْنَاand look (at) us لَكَانَsurely it (would) have been خَيْرًۭاbetter لَّهُمْfor them وَأَقْوَمَand more suitable وَلَـٰكِن[And] but لَّعَنَهُمُcursed them ٱللَّهُAllah بِكُفْرِهِمْfor their disbelief فَلَاso not يُؤْمِنُونَthey believe إِلَّاexcept قَلِيلًۭاa few٤٦

Some Jews distort the meaning of [revealed] words: they say, ‘We hear and disobey,’ and ‘Listen,’ [adding the insult] ‘May you not hear,’ and ‘Raina [Look at us],’ twisting it abusively with their tongues so as to disparage religion. If they had said, ‘We hear and obey,’ ‘Listen,’ and ‘Unzurna [Look at us],’ that would have been better and more proper for them. But God has spurned them for their defiance; they believe very little.

People of the Book, believe in what We have sent down to confirm what you already have before We wipe out [your sense of ] direction, turning you back, or reject you, as We rejected those who broke the Sabbath: God’s will is always done.

God does not forgive the joining of partners with Him: anything less than that He forgives to whoever He will, but anyone who joins partners with God has concocted a tremendous sin.

أَلَمْDo not تَرَyou see إِلَى[towards]ٱلَّذِينَthose who يُزَكُّونَclaim purity أَنفُسَهُم ۚ(for) themselves بَلِNay ٱللَّهُ(it is) Allah يُزَكِّىHe purifies مَنwhom يَشَآءُHe wills وَلَاand not يُظْلَمُونَthey will be wronged فَتِيلًا(even as much as) a hair on a date-seed٤٩

[Prophet], have you considered those who claim purity for themselves? No! God purifies whoever He will: no one will be wronged by as much as the husk of a date stone.

ٱنظُرْSee كَيْفَhow يَفْتَرُونَthey invent عَلَىabout ٱللَّهِAllah ٱلْكَذِبَ ۖ[the] lie وَكَفَىٰand sufficient بِهِۦٓis it إِثْمًۭا(as) a sin مُّبِينًاmanifest٥٠

See how they invent lies about God, this in itself is a flagrant sin!

Do you not see how those given a share of the Scripture, [evidently] now believe in idols and evil powers? They say of the disbelievers, ‘They are more rightly guided than the believers.’

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose ٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones لَعَنَهُمُ(who have been) cursed ٱللَّهُ ۖ(by) Allah وَمَنand whoever يَلْعَنِ(is) cursed ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah فَلَنthen never تَجِدَwill you find لَهُۥfor him نَصِيرًا(any) helper٥٢

Those are the ones God has rejected: you [Prophet] will not find anyone to help those God has rejected.

أَمْOr لَهُمْfor them نَصِيبٌۭ(is) a share مِّنَof ٱلْمُلْكِthe Kingdom فَإِذًۭاThen لَّاnot would يُؤْتُونَthey give ٱلنَّاسَthe people نَقِيرًا(even as much as the) speck on a date seed٥٣

Do they have any share of what He possesses? If they did they would not give away so much as the groove of a date stone.

أَمْOr يَحْسُدُونَare they jealous ٱلنَّاسَ(of) the people عَلَىٰfor مَآwhat ءَاتَىٰهُمُgave them ٱللَّهُAllah مِنfrom فَضْلِهِۦ ۖHis Bounty فَقَدْBut surely ءَاتَيْنَآWe gave ءَالَ(the) family إِبْرَٰهِيمَ(of) Ibrahim ٱلْكِتَـٰبَthe Book وَٱلْحِكْمَةَand [the] wisdom وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمand [We] gave them مُّلْكًاa kingdom عَظِيمًۭاgreat٥٤

Do they envy [other] people for the bounty God has granted them? We gave the descendants of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom- and We gave them a great kingdom-

فَمِنْهُمThen of them مَّنْ(are some) who ءَامَنَbelieved بِهِۦin him وَمِنْهُمand of them مَّن(are some) who صَدَّturned away عَنْهُ ۚfrom him وَكَفَىٰand sufficient بِجَهَنَّمَ(is) Hell سَعِيرًا(as a) Blazing Fire٥٥

but some of them believed in it and some turned away from it. Hell blazes fiercely enough.

We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the Fire. When their skins have been burned away, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to feel the pain: God is mighty and wise.

As for those who believe and do good deeds, We shall admit them into Gardens graced with flow-ing streams and there they will remain forever. They will have pure spouses there, and We shall admit them into cool refreshing shade.

God commands you [people] to return things entrusted to you to their rightful owners, and, if you judge between people, to do so with justice: God’s instructions to you are excellent, for He hears and sees everything.

You who believe, obey God and the Messenger, and those in authority among you. If you are in dispute over any matter, refer it to God and the Messenger, if you truly believe in God and the Last Day: that is better and fairer in the end.

Do you [Prophet] not see those who claim to believe in what has been sent down to you, and in what was sent down before you, yet still want to turn to unjust tyrants for judgement, although they have been ordered to reject them? Satan wants to lead them far astray.

وَإِذَاAnd when قِيلَit is said لَهُمْto them تَعَالَوْا۟Come إِلَىٰto مَآwhat أَنزَلَ(has) revealed ٱللَّهُAllah وَإِلَىand to ٱلرَّسُولِthe Messenger رَأَيْتَyou see ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَthe hypocrites يَصُدُّونَturning away عَنكَfrom you صُدُودًۭا(in) aversion٦١

When they are told, ‘Turn to God’s revelations and the Messenger [for judgement],’ you see the hypocrites turn right away from you [Prophet].

فَكَيْفَSo how إِذَآwhen أَصَـٰبَتْهُمbefalls them مُّصِيبَةٌۢdisaster بِمَاfor what قَدَّمَتْsent forth أَيْدِيهِمْtheir hands ثُمَّthen جَآءُوكَthey come to you يَحْلِفُونَswearing بِٱللَّهِby Allah إِنْNot أَرَدْنَآwe intended إِلَّآexcept إِحْسَـٰنًۭاgood وَتَوْفِيقًاand reconciliation٦٢

If disaster strikes them because of what they themselves have done, then they will come to you, swearing by God, ‘We only wanted to do good and achieve harmony.’

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose ٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones who يَعْلَمُknows ٱللَّهُAllah مَاwhat فِى(is) in قُلُوبِهِمْtheir hearts فَأَعْرِضْso turn away عَنْهُمْfrom them وَعِظْهُمْand admonish them وَقُلand say لَّهُمْto them فِىٓconcerning أَنفُسِهِمْtheir souls قَوْلًۢاa word بَلِيغًۭاpenetrating٦٣

God knows well what is in the hearts of these people, so ignore what they say, instruct them, and speak to them about themselves using penetrating words.

All the messengers We sent were meant to be obeyed, by God’s leave. If only [the hypocrites] had come to you [Prophet] when they wronged themselves, and begged God’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found that God accepts repentance and is most merciful.

فَلَاBut no وَرَبِّكَby your Lord لَاnot يُؤْمِنُونَwill they believe حَتَّىٰuntil يُحَكِّمُوكَthey make you judge فِيمَاabout what شَجَرَarises بَيْنَهُمْbetween them ثُمَّthen لَاnot يَجِدُوا۟they find فِىٓin أَنفُسِهِمْthemselves حَرَجًۭاany discomfort مِّمَّاabout what قَضَيْتَyou (have) decided وَيُسَلِّمُوا۟and submit تَسْلِيمًۭا(in full) submission٦٥

By your Lord, they will not be true believers until they let you decide between them in all matters of dispute, and find no resistance in their souls to your decisions, accepting them totally-

if We had ordered, ‘Lay down your lives’ or ‘Leave your homes,’ they would not have done so, except for a few- it would have been far better for them and stronger confirmation of their faith, if they had done as they were told,

وَإِذًۭاAnd then لَّـَٔاتَيْنَـٰهُمWe would (have) given them مِّنfrom لَّدُنَّآOurselves أَجْرًاa reward عَظِيمًۭاgreat٦٧

and We would have given them a rich reward of Our own

وَلَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمْAnd We would have guided them صِرَٰطًۭا(to the) way مُّسْتَقِيمًۭا(the) straight٦٨

and guided them to a straight path.

وَمَنAnd whoever يُطِعِobeys ٱللَّهَAllah وَٱلرَّسُولَand the Messenger فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen those مَعَ(will be) with ٱلَّذِينَthose whom أَنْعَمَhas bestowed (His) Favor ٱللَّهُAllah عَلَيْهِمupon them مِّنَof ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَthe Prophets وَٱلصِّدِّيقِينَand the truthful وَٱلشُّهَدَآءِand the martyrs وَٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ ۚand the righteous وَحَسُنَAnd excellent أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ(are) those رَفِيقًۭاcompanion(s)٦٩

Whoever obeys God and the Messenger will be among those He has blessed: the messengers, the truthful, those who bear witness to the truth, and the righteous- what excellent companions these are!

ذَٰلِكَThat ٱلْفَضْلُ(is) the Bounty مِنَof ٱللَّهِ ۚAllah وَكَفَىٰand sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah عَلِيمًۭا(as) All-Knower٧٠

That is God’s favour. No one knows better than Him.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you ٱلَّذِينَwho ءَامَنُوا۟believe[d]خُذُوا۟Take حِذْرَكُمْyour precautions فَٱنفِرُوا۟and advance ثُبَاتٍ(in) groups أَوِor ٱنفِرُوا۟advance جَمِيعًۭاall together٧١

You who believe, be on your guard. March [to battle] in small groups or as one body.

وَإِنَّAnd indeed مِنكُمْamong you لَمَن(is he) who لَّيُبَطِّئَنَّlags behind فَإِنْthen if أَصَـٰبَتْكُمbefalls you مُّصِيبَةٌۭa disaster قَالَhe said قَدْVerily أَنْعَمَ(has) favored ٱللَّهُAllah عَلَىَّ[on] me إِذْ[when]لَمْ(that) not أَكُنI was مَّعَهُمْwith them شَهِيدًۭاpresent٧٢

Among you there is the sort of person who is sure to lag behind: if a calamity befalls you, he says, ‘God has been gracious to me that I was not there with them,’

وَلَئِنْAnd if أَصَـٰبَكُمْbefalls you فَضْلٌۭbounty مِّنَfrom ٱللَّهِAllah لَيَقُولَنَّhe would surely say كَأَنas if لَّمْ(had) not تَكُنۢthere been بَيْنَكُمْbetween you وَبَيْنَهُۥand between him مَوَدَّةٌۭany affection يَـٰلَيْتَنِىOh! I wish كُنتُI had been مَعَهُمْwith them فَأَفُوزَthen I would have attained فَوْزًاa success عَظِيمًۭاgreat٧٣

yet he is sure to say, if you are favoured by God, ‘If only I had been with them, I could have made great gains,’ as if there had been no ties of affection between you and him.

Let those of you who are willing to trade the life of this world for the life to come, fight in God’s way. To anyone who fights in God’s way, whether killed or victorious, We shall give a great reward.

Why should you not fight in God’s cause and for those oppressed men, women, and children who cry out, ‘Lord, rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors! By Your grace, give us a protector and give us a helper!’?

The believers fight for God’s cause, while those who reject faith fight for an unjust cause. Fight the allies of Satan: Satan’s strategies are truly weak.

أَلَمْHave not تَرَyou seen إِلَى[towards]ٱلَّذِينَthose who قِيلَ(when) it was said لَهُمْto them كُفُّوٓا۟Restrain أَيْدِيَكُمْyour hands وَأَقِيمُوا۟and establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayer وَءَاتُوا۟and give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَthe zakah فَلَمَّاThen when كُتِبَwas ordained عَلَيْهِمُon them ٱلْقِتَالُthe fighting إِذَاthen فَرِيقٌۭa group مِّنْهُمْof them يَخْشَوْنَ[they] fear ٱلنَّاسَthe people كَخَشْيَةِas (they) fear ٱللَّهِAllah أَوْor أَشَدَّmore intense خَشْيَةًۭ ۚfear وَقَالُوا۟and they said رَبَّنَاOur Lord لِمَwhy كَتَبْتَhave You ordained عَلَيْنَاupon us ٱلْقِتَالَ[the] fighting لَوْلَآWhy not أَخَّرْتَنَآYou postpone (it for) us إِلَىٰٓto أَجَلٍۢa term قَرِيبٍۢ ۗnear قُلْSay مَتَـٰعُEnjoyment ٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the world قَلِيلٌۭ(is) little وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُand the Hereafter خَيْرٌۭ(is) better لِّمَنِfor whoever ٱتَّقَىٰfears (Allah)وَلَاand not تُظْلَمُونَyou will be wronged فَتِيلًا(even as much as) a hair on a date-seed٧٧

[Prophet], do you not see those who were told, ‘Restrain yourselves from fighting, perform the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms’? When fighting was ordained for them, some of them feared men as much as, or even more than, they feared God, saying, ‘Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us? If only You would give us just a little more time.’ Say to them, ‘Little is the enjoyment in this world, the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of God: you will not be wronged by as much as the fibre in a date stone.

أَيْنَمَاWherever تَكُونُوا۟you be يُدْرِككُّمُwill overtake you ٱلْمَوْتُ[the] death وَلَوْeven if كُنتُمْyou are فِىin بُرُوجٍۢtowers مُّشَيَّدَةٍۢ ۗlofty وَإِنAnd if تُصِبْهُمْbefalls them حَسَنَةٌۭany good يَقُولُوا۟they say هَـٰذِهِۦThis مِنْ(is)عِندِfrom ٱللَّهِ ۖAllah وَإِنAnd if تُصِبْهُمْbefalls them سَيِّئَةٌۭany evil يَقُولُوا۟they say هَـٰذِهِۦThis مِنْ(is)عِندِكَ ۚ(from) you قُلْSay كُلٌّۭAll مِّنْ(is)عِندِfrom ٱللَّهِ ۖAllah فَمَالِSo what (is wrong)هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ(with) these ٱلْقَوْمِ[the] people لَاnot يَكَادُونَdo they seem يَفْقَهُونَ(to) understand حَدِيثًۭاany statement٧٨

Death will overtake you no matter where you may be, even inside high towers.’ When good fortune comes their way, they say, ‘This is from God,’ but when harm befalls them, they say, ‘This is from you [Prophet].’ Say to them, ‘Both come from God.’ What is the matter with these people that they can barely understand what they are told?

مَّآWhat(ever)أَصَابَكَbefalls you مِنْof حَسَنَةٍۢ(the) good فَمِنَ(is) from ٱللَّهِ ۖAllah وَمَآand whatever أَصَابَكَbefalls you مِنof سَيِّئَةٍۢ(the) evil فَمِن(is) from نَّفْسِكَ ۚyourself وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰكَAnd We have sent you لِلنَّاسِfor the people رَسُولًۭا ۚ(as) a Messenger وَكَفَىٰand is sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah شَهِيدًۭا(as) a Witness٧٩

Anything good that happens to you [Prophet] is from God; anything bad is [ultimately] from yourself. We have sent you as a messenger to people; God is sufficient witness.

مَّن(He) who يُطِعِobeys ٱلرَّسُولَthe Messenger فَقَدْthen surely أَطَاعَhe obeyed ٱللَّهَ ۖAllah وَمَنand whoever تَوَلَّىٰturns away فَمَآthen not أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَWe (have) sent you عَلَيْهِمْover them حَفِيظًۭا(as) a guardian٨٠

Whoever obeys the Messenger obeys God. If some pay no heed, We have not sent you to be their keeper.

They say, ‘We obey you,’ but as soon as they leave your presence, some of them scheme by night to do other than what you said. God records what they scheme, so leave them alone, and put your trust in God: He is sufficient protector.

أَفَلَاThen (do) not يَتَدَبَّرُونَthey ponder ٱلْقُرْءَانَ ۚ(on) the Quran وَلَوْAnd if كَانَit had (been)مِنْ(of)عِندِfrom غَيْرِother than ٱللَّهِAllah لَوَجَدُوا۟surely they (would have) found فِيهِin it ٱخْتِلَـٰفًۭاcontradiction كَثِيرًۭاmuch٨٢

Will they not think about this Quran? If it had been from anyone other than God, they would have found much inconsistency in it.

وَإِذَاAnd when جَآءَهُمْcomes to them أَمْرٌۭa matter مِّنَof ٱلْأَمْنِthe security أَوِor ٱلْخَوْفِ[the] fear أَذَاعُوا۟they spread بِهِۦ ۖ[with] it وَلَوْBut if رَدُّوهُthey (had) referred it إِلَىto ٱلرَّسُولِthe Messenger وَإِلَىٰٓand to أُو۟لِىthose ٱلْأَمْرِ(having) authority مِنْهُمْamong them لَعَلِمَهُsurely would have known it ٱلَّذِينَthose who يَسْتَنۢبِطُونَهُۥdraw correct conclusion (from) it مِنْهُمْ ۗamong them وَلَوْلَاAnd if not فَضْلُ(had been the) bounty ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah عَلَيْكُمْon you وَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His Mercy لَٱتَّبَعْتُمُsurely you (would have) followed ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَthe Shaitaan إِلَّاexcept قَلِيلًۭاa few٨٣

Whenever news of any matter comes to them, whether concerning peace or war, they spread it about; if they referred it to the Messenger and those in authority among them, those seeking its meaning would have found it out from them. If it were not for God’s bounty and mercy towards you, you would almost all have followed Satan.

So [Prophet] fight in God’s way. You are accountable only for yourself. Urge the believers on. God may well curb the power of the disbelievers, for He is stronger in might and more terrible in punishment.

Whoever speaks for a good cause will share in its benefits and whoever speaks for a bad cause will share in its burden: God controls everything.

وَإِذَاAnd when حُيِّيتُمyou are greeted بِتَحِيَّةٍۢwith a greeting فَحَيُّوا۟then greet بِأَحْسَنَwith better مِنْهَآthan it أَوْor رُدُّوهَآ ۗreturn it إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَلَىٰof كُلِّevery شَىْءٍthing حَسِيبًاan Accountant٨٦

But [even in battle] when you [believers] are offered a greeting, respond with a better one, or at least return it: God keeps account of everything.

ٱللَّهُAllah لَآ(there is) no إِلَـٰهَgod إِلَّاexcept هُوَ ۚHim لَيَجْمَعَنَّكُمْsurely He will gather you إِلَىٰto يَوْمِ(the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) Resurrection لَاno رَيْبَdoubt فِيهِ ۗabout it وَمَنْAnd who أَصْدَقُ(is) more truthful مِنَthan ٱللَّهِAllah حَدِيثًۭا(in) statement٨٧

He is God: there is no god but Him. He will gather you all together on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Whose word can be truer than God’s?

[Believers], why are you divided in two about the hypocrites, when God Himself has rejected them because of what they have done? Do you want to guide those God has left to stray? If God leaves anyone to stray, you [Prophet] will never find the way for him.

They would dearly like you to reject faith, as they themselves have done, to be like them. So do not take them as allies until they migrate [to Medina] for God’s cause. If they turn [on you], then seize and kill them wherever you encounter them. Take none of them as an ally or supporter.

إِلَّاExcept ٱلَّذِينَthose who يَصِلُونَjoin إِلَىٰ[to]قَوْمٍۭa group بَيْنَكُمْbetween you وَبَيْنَهُمand between them مِّيثَـٰقٌ(is) a treaty أَوْor جَآءُوكُمْthose who come to you حَصِرَتْrestraining صُدُورُهُمْtheir hearts أَنthat يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْthey fight you أَوْor يُقَـٰتِلُوا۟they fight قَوْمَهُمْ ۚtheir people وَلَوْAnd if شَآءَ(had) willed ٱللَّهُAllah لَسَلَّطَهُمْsurely He (would have) given them power عَلَيْكُمْover you فَلَقَـٰتَلُوكُمْ ۚand surely they (would have) fought you فَإِنِSo if ٱعْتَزَلُوكُمْthey withdraw from you فَلَمْand (do) not يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْfight against you وَأَلْقَوْا۟and offer إِلَيْكُمُto you ٱلسَّلَمَ[the] peace فَمَاthen not جَعَلَ(has) made ٱللَّهُAllah لَكُمْfor you عَلَيْهِمْagainst them سَبِيلًۭاa way٩٠

But as for those who seek refuge with people with whom you have a treaty, or who come over to you because their hearts shrink from fighting against you or against their own people, God could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. So if they withdraw and do not fight you, and offer you peace, then God gives you no way against them.

سَتَجِدُونَYou will find ءَاخَرِينَothers يُرِيدُونَwishing أَنthat يَأْمَنُوكُمْthey be secure from you وَيَأْمَنُوا۟and they be secure from قَوْمَهُمْtheir people كُلَّEverytime مَاthat رُدُّوٓا۟they are returned إِلَىto ٱلْفِتْنَةِthe temptation أُرْكِسُوا۟they are plunged فِيهَا ۚinto it فَإِنSo if لَّمْnot يَعْتَزِلُوكُمْthey withdraw from you وَيُلْقُوٓا۟and offer إِلَيْكُمُto you ٱلسَّلَمَ[the] peace وَيَكُفُّوٓا۟and they restrain أَيْدِيَهُمْtheir hands فَخُذُوهُمْthen seize them وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْand kill them حَيْثُwherever ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ ۚyou find them وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْAnd those جَعَلْنَاWe made لَكُمْfor you عَلَيْهِمْagainst them سُلْطَـٰنًۭاan authority مُّبِينًۭاclear٩١

You will find others who wish to be safe from you, and from their own people, but whenever they are back in a situation where they are tempted [to fight you], they succumb to it. So if they neither withdraw, nor offer you peace, nor restrain themselves from fighting you, seize and kill them wherever you encounter them: We give you clear authority against such people.

وَمَاAnd not كَانَis لِمُؤْمِنٍfor a believer أَنthat يَقْتُلَhe kills مُؤْمِنًاa believer إِلَّاexcept خَطَـًۭٔا ۚ(by) mistake وَمَنAnd whoever قَتَلَkilled مُؤْمِنًاa believer خَطَـًۭٔا(by) mistake فَتَحْرِيرُthen freeing رَقَبَةٍۢ(of) a slave مُّؤْمِنَةٍۢ believing وَدِيَةٌۭand blood money مُّسَلَّمَةٌ(is to be) paid إِلَىٰٓto أَهْلِهِۦٓhis family إِلَّآunless أَنthat يَصَّدَّقُوا۟ ۚthey remit (as) charity فَإِنBut if كَانَ(he) was مِنfrom قَوْمٍa people عَدُوٍّۢhostile لَّكُمْto you وَهُوَand he was مُؤْمِنٌۭa believer فَتَحْرِيرُthen freeing رَقَبَةٍۢ(of) a believing slave مُّؤْمِنَةٍۢ ۖ believing وَإِنAnd if كَانَ(he) was مِنfrom قَوْمٍۭa people بَيْنَكُمْbetween you وَبَيْنَهُمand between them مِّيثَـٰقٌۭ(is) a treaty فَدِيَةٌۭthen blood money مُّسَلَّمَةٌ(is to be) paid إِلَىٰٓto أَهْلِهِۦhis family وَتَحْرِيرُand freeing رَقَبَةٍۢ(of) a slave مُّؤْمِنَةٍۢ ۖ believing فَمَنAnd whoever لَّمْ(does) not يَجِدْfind فَصِيَامُthen fasting شَهْرَيْنِ(for) two months مُتَتَابِعَيْنِconsecutively تَوْبَةًۭ(seeking) repentance مِّنَfrom ٱللَّهِ ۗAllah وَكَانَand is ٱللَّهُAllah عَلِيمًاAll-Knowing حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise٩٢

Never should a believer kill another believer, except by mistake. If anyone kills a believer by mistake he must free one Muslim slave and pay compensation to the victim’s relatives, unless they charitably forgo it; if the victim belonged to a people at war with you but is a believer, then the compensation is only to free a believing slave; if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation should be handed over to his relatives, and a believing slave set free. Anyone who lacks the means to do this must fast for two consecutive months by way of repentance to God: God is all knowing, all wise.

وَمَنAnd whoever يَقْتُلْkills مُؤْمِنًۭاa believer مُّتَعَمِّدًۭاintentionally فَجَزَآؤُهُۥthen his recompense جَهَنَّمُ(is) Hell خَـٰلِدًۭاabiding forever فِيهَاin it وَغَضِبَand will fall the wrath ٱللَّهُ(of) Allah عَلَيْهِon him وَلَعَنَهُۥand He (will) curse him وَأَعَدَّand He has prepared لَهُۥfor him عَذَابًاa punishment عَظِيمًۭاgreat٩٣

If anyone kills a believer deliberately, the punishment for him is Hell, and there he will remain: God is angry with him, and rejects him, and has prepared a tremendous torment for him.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you ٱلَّذِينَwho ءَامَنُوٓا۟believe[d]إِذَاWhen ضَرَبْتُمْyou go forth فِىin سَبِيلِ(the) way ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah فَتَبَيَّنُوا۟then investigate وَلَاand (do) not تَقُولُوا۟say لِمَنْto (the one) who أَلْقَىٰٓoffers إِلَيْكُمُto you ٱلسَّلَـٰمَ(a greeting of) peace لَسْتَYou are not مُؤْمِنًۭاa believer تَبْتَغُونَseeking عَرَضَtransitory gains ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the life ٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the world فَعِندَfor with ٱللَّهِAllah مَغَانِمُ(are) booties كَثِيرَةٌۭ ۚabundant كَذَٰلِكَLike that كُنتُمyou were مِّنfrom قَبْلُbefore فَمَنَّthen conferred favor ٱللَّهُAllah عَلَيْكُمْupon you فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ ۚso investigate إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis بِمَاof what تَعْمَلُونَyou do خَبِيرًۭاAll-Aware٩٤

So, you who believe, be careful when you go to fight in God’s way, and do not say to someone who offers you a greeting of peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ out of desire for the chance gains of this life- God has plenty of gains for you. You yourself were in the same position [once], but God was gracious to you, so be careful: God is fully aware of what you do.

لَّاNot يَسْتَوِى(are) equal ٱلْقَـٰعِدُونَthe ones who sit مِنَamong ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers غَيْرُother than أُو۟لِىthe ones (who are)ٱلضَّرَرِ[the] disabled وَٱلْمُجَـٰهِدُونَand the ones who strive فِىin سَبِيلِ(the) way ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْwith their wealth وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚand their lives فَضَّلَPreferred ٱللَّهُ(has) Allah ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَthe ones who strive بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْwith their wealth وَأَنفُسِهِمْand their lives عَلَىto ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَthe ones who sit دَرَجَةًۭ ۚ(in) rank وَكُلًّۭاAnd (to) all وَعَدَpromised ٱللَّهُ(has) Allah ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚthe best وَفَضَّلَpreferred ٱللَّهُ(has) Allah ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَthe ones who strive عَلَىover ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَthe ones who sit أَجْرًا(with) a reward عَظِيمًۭاgreat٩٥

Those believers who stay at home, apart from those with an incapacity, are not equal to those who commit themselves and their possessions to striving in God’s way. God has raised such people to a rank above those who stay at home- although He has promised all believers a good reward, those who strive are favoured with a tremendous reward above those who stay at home-

دَرَجَـٰتٍۢRanks مِّنْهُfrom Him وَمَغْفِرَةًۭand forgiveness وَرَحْمَةًۭ ۚand mercy وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgiving رَّحِيمًاMost Merciful٩٦

high ranks conferred by Him, as well as forgiveness, and mercy: God is most forgiving and merciful.

When the angels take the souls of those who have wronged themselves, they ask them, ‘What circumstances were you in?’ They reply, ‘We were oppressed in this land,’ and the angels say, ‘But was God’s earth not spacious enough for you to migrate to some other place?’ These people will have Hell as their refuge, an evil destination,

إِلَّاExcept ٱلْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَthe oppressed مِنَamong ٱلرِّجَالِthe men وَٱلنِّسَآءِand the women وَٱلْوِلْدَٰنِand the children لَا(who) not يَسْتَطِيعُونَare able to حِيلَةًۭplan وَلَاand not يَهْتَدُونَthey are directed سَبِيلًۭا(to) a way٩٨

but not so the truly helpless men, women, and children who have no means in their power nor any way to leave-

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThen those عَسَىmay be ٱللَّهُAllah أَنwill يَعْفُوَpardon عَنْهُمْ ۚ[on] them وَكَانَand is ٱللَّهُAllah عَفُوًّاOft-Pardoning غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgiving٩٩

God may well pardon these, for He is most pardoning and most forgiving.

100

Anyone who migrates for God’s cause will find many a refuge and great plenty in the earth, and if anyone leaves home as a migrant towards God and His Messenger and is then overtaken by death, his reward from God is sure. God is most forgiving and most merciful.

101

When you [believers] are travelling in the land, you will not be blamed for shortening your prayers, if you fear the disbelievers may harm you: they are your sworn enemies.

102

وَإِذَاAnd when كُنتَyou are فِيهِمْamong them فَأَقَمْتَand you lead لَهُمُfor them ٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayer فَلْتَقُمْthen let stand طَآئِفَةٌۭa group مِّنْهُمof them مَّعَكَwith you وَلْيَأْخُذُوٓا۟and let them take أَسْلِحَتَهُمْtheir arms فَإِذَاThen when سَجَدُوا۟they have prostrated فَلْيَكُونُوا۟then let them be مِنfrom وَرَآئِكُمْbehind you وَلْتَأْتِand let come (forward)طَآئِفَةٌa group أُخْرَىٰother لَمْ(which has) not يُصَلُّوا۟prayed فَلْيُصَلُّوا۟and let them pray مَعَكَwith you وَلْيَأْخُذُوا۟and let them take حِذْرَهُمْtheir precautions وَأَسْلِحَتَهُمْ ۗand their arms وَدَّWished ٱلَّذِينَthose who كَفَرُوا۟disbelieved لَوْif تَغْفُلُونَyou neglect عَنْ[about]أَسْلِحَتِكُمْyour arms وَأَمْتِعَتِكُمْand your baggage فَيَمِيلُونَso (that) they (can) assault عَلَيْكُم[upon] you مَّيْلَةًۭ(in) an attack وَٰحِدَةًۭ ۚsingle وَلَاBut (there is) no جُنَاحَblame عَلَيْكُمْupon you إِنif كَانَwas بِكُمْwith you أَذًۭىany trouble مِّن(because) of مَّطَرٍrain أَوْor كُنتُمyou are مَّرْضَىٰٓsick أَنthat تَضَعُوٓا۟you lay down أَسْلِحَتَكُمْ ۖyour arms وَخُذُوا۟but take حِذْرَكُمْ ۗyour precautions إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah أَعَدَّhas prepared لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers عَذَابًۭاa punishment مُّهِينًۭاhumiliating١٠٢

When you [Prophet] are with the believers, leading them in prayer, let a group of them stand up in prayer with you, taking their weapons with them, and when they have finished their prostration, let them take up their positions at the back. Then let the other group, who have not yet prayed, pray with you, also on their guard and armed with their weapons: the disbelievers would dearly like you to be heedless of your weapons and baggage, in order for them to take you in a single assault. You will not be blamed if you lay aside your arms when you are overtaken by heavy rain or illness, but be on your guard. Indeed, God has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.

103

After performing the ritual prayer, continue to remember God- standing, sitting, and lying on your sides- and once you are safe, keep up regular prayer, for prayer is obligatory for the believers at prescribed times.

104

Do not be faint-hearted in pursuing the enemy: if you are suffering hardship, so are they, but you hope to receive something from God for which they cannot hope. God is all knowing and wise.

105

إِنَّآIndeed أَنزَلْنَآWe (have) sent down إِلَيْكَto you ٱلْكِتَـٰبَthe Book بِٱلْحَقِّwith the truth لِتَحْكُمَso that you may judge بَيْنَbetween ٱلنَّاسِthe people بِمَآwith what أَرَىٰكَhas shown you ٱللَّهُ ۚAllah وَلَاAnd (do) not تَكُنbe لِّلْخَآئِنِينَfor the deceitful خَصِيمًۭاa pleader١٠٥

We have sent down the Scripture to you [Prophet] with the truth so that you can judge between people in accordance with what God has shown you. Do not be an advocate for those who betray trust.

106

وَٱسْتَغْفِرِAnd seek forgiveness ٱللَّهَ ۖ(of) Allah إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgiving رَّحِيمًۭاMost Merciful١٠٦

Ask God for forgiveness: He is most forgiving and merciful.

107

وَلَاAnd (do) not تُجَـٰدِلْargue عَنِfor ٱلَّذِينَthose who يَخْتَانُونَdeceive أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚthemselves إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah لَا(does) not يُحِبُّlove مَن(the one) who كَانَis خَوَّانًاtreacherous أَثِيمًۭا(and) sinful١٠٧

Do not argue for those who betray their own souls: God does not love anyone given to treachery and sin.

108

They try to hide themselves from people, but they cannot hide from God. He is with them when they plot at night, saying things that do not please Him: He is fully aware of everything they do.

109

هَـٰٓأَنتُمْHere you are هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِthose who جَـٰدَلْتُمْ[you] argue عَنْهُمْfor them فِىin ٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe life ٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the world فَمَنbut who يُجَـٰدِلُwill argue ٱللَّهَ(with) Allah عَنْهُمْfor them يَوْمَ(on the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) [the] Resurrection أَمor مَّنwho يَكُونُwill be عَلَيْهِمْ[over them]وَكِيلًۭا(their) defender١٠٩

There you [believers] are, arguing on their behalf in this life, but who will argue on their behalf with God on the Day of Resurrection? Who will be their defender?

110

وَمَنAnd whoever يَعْمَلْdoes سُوٓءًاevil أَوْor يَظْلِمْwrongs نَفْسَهُۥhis soul ثُمَّthen يَسْتَغْفِرِseeks forgiveness ٱللَّهَ(of) Allah يَجِدِhe will find ٱللَّهَAllah غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgiving رَّحِيمًۭاMost Merciful١١٠

Yet anyone who does evil or wrongs his own soul and then asks God for forgiveness will find Him most forgiving and merciful.

111

وَمَنAnd whoever يَكْسِبْearns إِثْمًۭاsin فَإِنَّمَاthen only يَكْسِبُهُۥhe earns it عَلَىٰagainst نَفْسِهِۦ ۚhis soul وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah عَلِيمًاAll-Knowing حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise١١١

He who commits sin does so against his own soul- God is all knowing and wise-

112

وَمَنAnd whoever يَكْسِبْearns خَطِيٓـَٔةًa fault أَوْor إِثْمًۭاa sin ثُمَّthen يَرْمِthrows بِهِۦit بَرِيٓـًۭٔا(on) an innocent فَقَدِthen surely ٱحْتَمَلَhe (has) burdened (himself)بُهْتَـٰنًۭا(with) a slander وَإِثْمًۭاand a sin مُّبِينًۭاmanifest١١٢

and anyone who commits an offence or a sin, and then throws the blame on to some innocent person, has burdened himself with deceit as well as flagrant sin.

113

If it were not for the grace of God and His mercy to you [Prophet], a party of them would have tried to lead you astray; they only lead themselves astray, and cannot harm you in any way, since God has sent down the Scripture and Wisdom to you, and taught you what you did not know. God’s bounty to you is great indeed.

114

There is no good in most of their secret talk, only in commanding charity, or good, or reconciliation between people. To anyone who does these things, seeking to please God, We shall give a rich reward;

115

if anyone opposes the Messenger, after guidance has been made clear to him, and follows a path other than that of the believers, We shall leave him on his chosen path- We shall burn him in Hell, an evil destination.

116

God does not forgive the worship of others beside Him- though He does forgive whoever He will for lesser sins- for whoever does this has gone far, far astray.

117

إِنNot يَدْعُونَthey invoke مِنfrom دُونِهِۦٓbesides Him إِلَّآbut إِنَـٰثًۭاfemale (deities)وَإِنand not يَدْعُونَthey invoke إِلَّاexcept شَيْطَـٰنًۭاShaitaan مَّرِيدًۭاrebellious١١٧

In His place the idolaters invoke only females, and Satan, the rebel

118

لَّعَنَهُHe was cursed ٱللَّهُ ۘby Allah وَقَالَand he said لَأَتَّخِذَنَّI will surely take مِنْfrom عِبَادِكَyour slaves نَصِيبًۭاa portion مَّفْرُوضًۭاappointed١١٨

God rejected, who said, ‘I will certainly take my due share of Your servants;

119

I will mislead them and incite vain desires in them; I will command them to slit the ears of cattle; I will command them to tamper with God’s creation.’ Whoever chooses Satan as a patron instead of God is utterly ruined:

120

يَعِدُهُمْHe promises them وَيُمَنِّيهِمْ ۖand arouses desires in them وَمَاand not يَعِدُهُمُpromises them ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُthe Shaitaan إِلَّاexcept غُرُورًاdeception١٢٠

he makes them promises and raises false hopes, but Satan’s promises are nothing but delusion.

121

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose مَأْوَىٰهُمْtheir abode جَهَنَّمُ(is) Hell وَلَاand not يَجِدُونَthey will find عَنْهَاfrom it مَحِيصًۭاany escape١٢١

Such people will have Hell for their home and will find no escape from it,

122

but We shall admit those who believe and do good deeds into Gardens graced with flowing streams, there to remain for ever––a true promise from God. Who speaks more truly than God?

123

It will not be according to your hopes or those of the People of the Book: anyone who does wrong will be requited for it and will find no one to protect or help him against God;

124

وَمَنAnd whoever يَعْمَلْdoes مِنَ[of]ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ[the] righteous deeds مِنfrom ذَكَرٍ(the) male أَوْor أُنثَىٰfemale وَهُوَand he مُؤْمِنٌۭ(is) a believer فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen those يَدْخُلُونَwill enter ٱلْجَنَّةَParadise وَلَاand not يُظْلَمُونَthey will be wronged نَقِيرًۭا(even as much as) the speck on a date-seed١٢٤

anyone, male or female, who does good deeds and is a believer, will enter Paradise and will not be wronged by as much as the dip in a date stone.

125

وَمَنْAnd who أَحْسَنُ(is) better دِينًۭا(in) religion مِّمَّنْthan (one) who أَسْلَمَsubmits وَجْهَهُۥhis face لِلَّهِto Allah وَهُوَand he مُحْسِنٌۭ(is) a good-doer وَٱتَّبَعَand follows مِلَّةَ(the) religion إِبْرَٰهِيمَ(of) Ibrahim حَنِيفًۭا ۗ(the) upright وَٱتَّخَذَAnd was taken ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah إِبْرَٰهِيمَIbrahim خَلِيلًۭا(as) a friend١٢٥

Who could be better in religion than those who direct themselves wholly to God, do good, and follow the religion of Abraham, who was true in faith? God took Abraham as a friend.

126

وَلِلَّهِAnd for Allah مَا(is) what فِى(is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَمَاand what فِى(is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚthe earth وَكَانَand is ٱللَّهُAllah بِكُلِّof every شَىْءٍۢthing مُّحِيطًۭاAll-Encompassing١٢٦

It is to God that everything in the heavens and earth belongs: God is fully aware of all things.

127

وَيَسْتَفْتُونَكَAnd they seek your ruling فِىconcerning ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۖthe women قُلِSay ٱللَّهُAllah يُفْتِيكُمْgives you the ruling فِيهِنَّabout them وَمَاand what يُتْلَىٰis recited عَلَيْكُمْto you فِىin ٱلْكِتَـٰبِthe Book فِىconcerning يَتَـٰمَىorphans ٱلنِّسَآءِ(of) girls ٱلَّـٰتِى(to) whom لَاnot تُؤْتُونَهُنَّ(do) you give them مَاwhat كُتِبَis ordained لَهُنَّfor them وَتَرْغَبُونَand you desire أَنto تَنكِحُوهُنَّmarry them وَٱلْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَand the ones who are weak مِنَof ٱلْوِلْدَٰنِthe children وَأَنand to تَقُومُوا۟stand لِلْيَتَـٰمَىٰfor orphans بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۚwith justice وَمَاAnd whatever تَفْعَلُوا۟you do مِنْof خَيْرٍۢgood فَإِنَّthen indeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis بِهِۦabout it عَلِيمًۭاAll-Knowing١٢٧

They ask you [Prophet] for a ruling about women. Say, ‘God Himself gives you a ruling about them. You already have what has been recited to you in the Scripture about orphan girls [in your charge] from whom you withhold the prescribed shares [of their inheritance] and whom you wish to marry, and also about helpless children- God instructs you to treat orphans fairly: He is well aware of whatever good you do.’

128

If a wife fears high-handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do.

129

You will never be able to treat your wives with equal fairness, however much you may desire to do so, but do not ignore one wife altogether, leaving her suspended [between marriage and divorce]. If you make amends and remain conscious of God, He is most forgiving and merciful,

130

وَإِنAnd if يَتَفَرَّقَاthey separate يُغْنِwill be enriched ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah كُلًّۭاeach (of them)مِّنfrom سَعَتِهِۦ ۚHis abundance وَكَانَand is ٱللَّهُAllah وَٰسِعًاAll-Encompassing حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise١٣٠

but if husband and wife do separate, God will provide for each out of His plenty: He is infinite in plenty, and all wise.

131

Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God. We have commanded those who were given the Scripture before you, and We command you, to be mindful of God. Even if you do ignore Him, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him, and He is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise.

132

وَلِلَّهِAnd for Allah مَا(is) whatever فِى(is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَمَاand whatever فِى(is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚthe earth وَكَفَىٰAnd is sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah وَكِيلًا(as) a Disposer of affairs١٣٢

Yes, indeed, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God, and He is enough for those who trust in Him.

133

إِنIf يَشَأْHe wills يُذْهِبْكُمْHe can take you away أَيُّهَاO ٱلنَّاسُpeople وَيَأْتِand bring بِـَٔاخَرِينَ ۚothers وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah عَلَىٰover ذَٰلِكَthat قَدِيرًۭاAll-Powerful١٣٣

If He so willed, He could remove you altogether and replace you with new people: He has full power to do so.

134

مَّنWhoever كَانَ[is]يُرِيدُdesires ثَوَابَreward ٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the world فَعِندَthen with ٱللَّهِAllah ثَوَابُ(is the) reward ٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the world وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚand the Hereafter وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah سَمِيعًۢاAll-Hearing بَصِيرًۭاAll-Seeing١٣٤

If some want the rewards of this world, the rewards of this world and the next are both God’s to give: He hears and sees everything.

135

۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you ٱلَّذِينَwho ءَامَنُوا۟believe[d]كُونُوا۟Be قَوَّٰمِينَcustodians بِٱلْقِسْطِof justice شُهَدَآءَ(as) witnesses لِلَّهِto Allah وَلَوْeven if عَلَىٰٓ(it is) against أَنفُسِكُمْyourselves أَوِor ٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِthe parents وَٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ ۚand the relatives إِنif يَكُنْhe be غَنِيًّاrich أَوْor فَقِيرًۭاpoor فَٱللَّهُfor Allah أَوْلَىٰ(is) nearer بِهِمَا ۖto both of them فَلَاSo (do) not تَتَّبِعُوا۟follow ٱلْهَوَىٰٓthe desire أَنlest تَعْدِلُوا۟ ۚyou deviate وَإِنAnd if تَلْوُۥٓا۟you distort أَوْor تُعْرِضُوا۟refrain فَإِنَّthen indeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis بِمَاof what تَعْمَلُونَyou do خَبِيرًۭاAll-Aware١٣٥

You who believe, uphold justice and bear witness to God, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, God can best take care of both. Refrain from following your own desire, so that you can act justly- if you distort or neglect justice, God is fully aware of what you do.

136

You who believe, believe in God and His Messenger and in the Scripture He sent down to His Messenger, as well as what He sent down before. Anyone who does not believe in God, His angels, His Scriptures, His messengers, and the Last Day has gone far, far astray.

137

As for those who believe, then reject the faith, then believe again, then reject the faith again and become increasingly defiant, God will not forgive them, nor will He guide them on any path.

138

بَشِّرِGive tidings ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ(to) the hypocrites بِأَنَّthat لَهُمْfor them عَذَابًا(is) a punishment أَلِيمًاpainful ١٣٨

[Prophet], tell such hypocrites that an agonizing torment awaits them.

139

ٱلَّذِينَThose who يَتَّخِذُونَtake ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَthe disbelievers أَوْلِيَآءَ(as) allies مِن(from)دُونِinstead of ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚthe believers أَيَبْتَغُونَDo they seek عِندَهُمُwith them ٱلْعِزَّةَthe honor فَإِنَّBut indeed ٱلْعِزَّةَthe honor لِلَّهِ(is) for Allah جَمِيعًۭاall١٣٩

Do those who ally themselves with the disbelievers rather than the believers seek power through them? In reality all power is God’s to give.

140

As He has already revealed to you [believers] in the Scripture, if you hear people denying and ridiculing God’s revelation, do not sit with them unless they start to talk of other things, or else you yourselves will become like them: God will gather all the hypocrites and disbelievers together into Hell.

141

ٱلَّذِينَThose who يَتَرَبَّصُونَare waiting بِكُمْfor you فَإِنThen if كَانَwas لَكُمْfor you فَتْحٌۭa victory مِّنَfrom ٱللَّهِAllah قَالُوٓا۟they say أَلَمْWere not نَكُنwe مَّعَكُمْwith you وَإِنBut if كَانَ(there) was لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers نَصِيبٌۭa chance قَالُوٓا۟they said أَلَمْDid not نَسْتَحْوِذْwe have advantage عَلَيْكُمْover you وَنَمْنَعْكُمand we protected you مِّنَfrom ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚthe believers فَٱللَّهُAnd Allah يَحْكُمُwill judge بَيْنَكُمْbetween you يَوْمَ(on the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ(of) the Resurrection وَلَنand never يَجْعَلَwill make ٱللَّهُAllah لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers عَلَىover ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers سَبِيلًاa way١٤١

The [hypocrites] wait to see what happens to you and, if God brings you success, they say, ‘Were we not on your side?’ but if the disbelievers have some success, they say to them, ‘Did we not have the upper hand over you, and [yet] protect you from the believers?’ God will judge between you all on the Day of Resurrection, and He will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers.

142

إِنَّIndeed ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَthe hypocrites يُخَـٰدِعُونَ(seek to) deceive ٱللَّهَAllah وَهُوَand (it is) He خَـٰدِعُهُمْwho deceives them وَإِذَاAnd when قَامُوٓا۟they stand إِلَىfor ٱلصَّلَوٰةِthe prayer قَامُوا۟they stand كُسَالَىٰlazily يُرَآءُونَshowing off ٱلنَّاسَ(to) the people وَلَاand not يَذْكُرُونَthey remember ٱللَّهَAllah إِلَّاexcept قَلِيلًۭاa little١٤٢

The hypocrites try to deceive God, but it is He who causes them to be deceived. When they stand up to pray, they do so sluggishly, showing off in front of people, and remember God only a little,

143

مُّذَبْذَبِينَWavering بَيْنَbetween ذَٰلِكَthat لَآnot إِلَىٰto هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِthese وَلَآand not إِلَىٰto هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ۚthose وَمَنAnd whoever يُضْلِلِhas been lead astray ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah فَلَنthen never تَجِدَyou will find لَهُۥfor him سَبِيلًۭاa way١٤٣

wavering all the time between this and that, belonging neither to one side nor the other. If God leaves someone to stray, you [Prophet] will never find a way for him.

144

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you ٱلَّذِينَwho ءَامَنُوا۟believe[d]لَا(Do) not تَتَّخِذُوا۟take ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَthe disbelievers أَوْلِيَآءَ(as) allies مِنfrom دُونِinstead of ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚthe believers أَتُرِيدُونَDo you wish أَنthat تَجْعَلُوا۟you make لِلَّهِfor Allah عَلَيْكُمْagainst you سُلْطَـٰنًۭاan evidence مُّبِينًاclear١٤٤

You who believe, do not take the disbelievers as allies and protectors instead of the believers: do you want to offer God clear proof against you?

145

إِنَّIndeed ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَthe hypocrites فِى(will be) in ٱلدَّرْكِthe depths ٱلْأَسْفَلِthe lowest مِنَof ٱلنَّارِthe Fire وَلَنand never تَجِدَyou will find لَهُمْfor them نَصِيرًاany helper١٤٥

The hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of Hell, and you will find no one to help them.

146

إِلَّاExcept ٱلَّذِينَthose who تَابُوا۟repent وَأَصْلَحُوا۟and correct (themselves)وَٱعْتَصَمُوا۟and hold fast بِٱللَّهِto Allah وَأَخْلَصُوا۟and are sincere دِينَهُمْ(in) their religion لِلَّهِfor Allah فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen those (will be)مَعَwith ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۖthe believers وَسَوْفَAnd soon يُؤْتِwill be given ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers أَجْرًاa reward عَظِيمًۭاgreat١٤٦

Not so those who repent, mend their ways, hold fast to God, and devote their religion entirely to Him: these will be joined with the believers, and God will give the believers a mighty reward.

147

مَّاWhat يَفْعَلُwould do ٱللَّهُAllah بِعَذَابِكُمْby punishing you إِنif شَكَرْتُمْyou are grateful وَءَامَنتُمْ ۚand you believe وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah شَاكِرًاAll-Appreciative عَلِيمًۭاAll-Knowing١٤٧

Why should God make you suffer torment if you are thankful and believe in Him? God always rewards gratitude and He knows everything.

148

۞ لَّا(Does) not يُحِبُّlove ٱللَّهُAllah ٱلْجَهْرَthe public mention بِٱلسُّوٓءِof [the] evil مِنَ[of]ٱلْقَوْلِ[the] words إِلَّاexcept مَن(by the one) who ظُلِمَ ۚhas been wronged وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah سَمِيعًاAll-Hearing عَلِيمًاAll-Knowing١٤٨

God does not like bad words to be made public unless someone has been wronged: He is all hearing and all knowing.

149

إِنIf تُبْدُوا۟you disclose خَيْرًاa good أَوْor تُخْفُوهُyou conceal it أَوْor تَعْفُوا۟pardon عَن[of]سُوٓءٍۢan evil فَإِنَّthen indeed ٱللَّهَAllah كَانَis عَفُوًّۭاOft-Pardoning قَدِيرًاAll-Powerful١٤٩

If you do good, openly or in secret, or if you pardon something bad,then God is most forgiving and powerful.

150

As for those who ignore God and His messengers and want to make a distinction between them, saying, ‘We believe in some but not in others,’ seeking a middle way,

151

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose هُمُthey ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ(are) the disbelievers حَقًّۭا ۚtruly وَأَعْتَدْنَاAnd We have prepared لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers عَذَابًۭاa punishment مُّهِينًۭاhumiliating١٥١

they are really disbelievers: We have prepared a humiliating punishment for those who disbelieve.

152

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who ءَامَنُوا۟believe بِٱللَّهِin Allah وَرُسُلِهِۦand His Messengers وَلَمْand not يُفَرِّقُوا۟they differentiate بَيْنَbetween أَحَدٍۢ(any) one مِّنْهُمْof them أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthose سَوْفَsoon يُؤْتِيهِمْHe will give them أُجُورَهُمْ ۗtheir reward وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgiving رَّحِيمًۭاMost Merciful١٥٢

But God will give [due] rewards to those who believe in Him and His messengers and make no distinction between any of them. God is most forgiving and merciful.

153

يَسْـَٔلُكَAsk you أَهْلُ(the) People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ(of) the Book أَنthat تُنَزِّلَyou bring down عَلَيْهِمْto them كِتَـٰبًۭاa book مِّنَfrom ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚthe heaven فَقَدْThen indeed سَأَلُوا۟they (had) asked مُوسَىٰٓMusa أَكْبَرَgreater مِنthan ذَٰلِكَthat فَقَالُوٓا۟for they said أَرِنَاShow us ٱللَّهَAllah جَهْرَةًۭmanifestly فَأَخَذَتْهُمُso struck them ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُthe thunderbolt بِظُلْمِهِمْ ۚfor their wrongdoing ثُمَّThen ٱتَّخَذُوا۟they took ٱلْعِجْلَthe calf (for worship)مِنۢfrom بَعْدِafter مَا[what]جَآءَتْهُمُcame to them ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُthe clear proofs فَعَفَوْنَاthen We forgave them عَنfor ذَٰلِكَ ۚthat وَءَاتَيْنَاAnd We gave مُوسَىٰMusa سُلْطَـٰنًۭاan authority مُّبِينًۭاclear١٥٣

The People of the Book demand that you [Prophet] make a book physically come down to them from heaven, but they demanded even more than that of Moses when they said, ‘Show us God face to face,’ and were struck by the thunderbolt for their presumption. Even after clear revelations had come down to them, they took the calf as an object of worship, yet We pardoned this, and gave Moses clear authority;

154

وَرَفَعْنَاAnd We raised فَوْقَهُمُover them ٱلطُّورَthe mount بِمِيثَـٰقِهِمْfor their covenant وَقُلْنَاand We said لَهُمُto them ٱدْخُلُوا۟Enter ٱلْبَابَthe gate سُجَّدًۭاprostrating وَقُلْنَاAnd We said لَهُمْto them لَا(Do) not تَعْدُوا۟transgress فِىin ٱلسَّبْتِthe Sabbath وَأَخَذْنَاAnd We took مِنْهُمfrom them مِّيثَـٰقًاa covenant غَلِيظًۭاsolemn١٥٤

We made the mountain tower high above them at their pledge; We said to them, ‘Enter the gate humbly,’ and, ‘Do not break the Sabbath,’ and took a solemn pledge from them.

155

And so for breaking their pledge, for rejecting God’s revelations, for unjustly killing their prophets, for saying ‘Our minds are closed’- No! God has sealed them in their disbelief, so they believe only a little-

156

وَبِكُفْرِهِمْAnd for their disbelief وَقَوْلِهِمْand their saying عَلَىٰagainst مَرْيَمَMaryam بُهْتَـٰنًاa slander عَظِيمًۭاgreat١٥٦

and because they disbelieved and uttered a terrible slander against Mary,

157

and said, ‘We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of God.’ (They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, though it was made to appear like that to them; those that disagreed about him are full of doubt, with no knowledge to follow, only supposition: they certainly did not kill him-

158

بَلNay رَّفَعَهُhe was raised ٱللَّهُ(by) Allah إِلَيْهِ ۚtowards Him وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah عَزِيزًاAll-Mighty حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise١٥٨

God raised him up to Himself. God is almighty and wise.

159

وَإِنAnd (there is) not مِّنْfrom أَهْلِ(the) People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ(of) the Book إِلَّاbut لَيُؤْمِنَنَّsurely he believes بِهِۦin him قَبْلَbefore مَوْتِهِۦ ۖhis death وَيَوْمَAnd (on the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection يَكُونُhe will be عَلَيْهِمْagainst them شَهِيدًۭاa witness١٥٩

There is not one of the People of the Book who will not believe in [Jesus] before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.)

160

فَبِظُلْمٍۢThen for (the) wrongdoing مِّنَof ٱلَّذِينَthose who هَادُوا۟were Jews حَرَّمْنَاWe made unlawful عَلَيْهِمْfor them طَيِّبَـٰتٍgood things أُحِلَّتْwhich had been lawful لَهُمْfor them وَبِصَدِّهِمْand for their hindering عَنfrom سَبِيلِ(the) way ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah كَثِيرًۭاmany١٦٠

For the wrongdoings done by the Jews, We forbade them certain good things that had been permitted to them before: for having frequently debarred others from God’s path;

161

وَأَخْذِهِمُAnd for their taking ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟(of) [the] usury وَقَدْwhile certainly نُهُوا۟they were forbidden عَنْهُfrom it وَأَكْلِهِمْand (for) their consuming أَمْوَٰلَwealth ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the people بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ ۚwrongfully وَأَعْتَدْنَاAnd We have prepared لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers مِنْهُمْamong them عَذَابًاa punishment أَلِيمًۭاpainful١٦١

for taking usury when they had been forbidden to do so; and for wrongfully devouring other people’s property. For those of them that reject the truth we have prepared an agonizing torment.

162

But those of them who are well grounded in knowledge and have faith do believe in what has been revealed to you [Muhammad], and in what was revealed before you- those who perform the prayers, pay the prescribed alms, and believe in God and the Last Day- to them We shall give a great reward.

163

We have sent revelation to you [Prophet] as We did to Noah and the prophets after him, to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon- to David We gave the book [of Psalms]-

164

وَرُسُلًۭاAnd Messengers قَدْsurely قَصَصْنَـٰهُمْWe (have) mentioned them عَلَيْكَto you مِنfrom قَبْلُbefore وَرُسُلًۭاand Messengers لَّمْnot نَقْصُصْهُمْWe (have) mentioned them عَلَيْكَ ۚto you وَكَلَّمَAnd spoke ٱللَّهُAllah مُوسَىٰ(to) Musa تَكْلِيمًۭا(in a) conversation١٦٤

to other messengers We have already mentioned to you, and also to some We have not. To Moses God spoke directly.

165

رُّسُلًۭاMessengers مُّبَشِّرِينَbearers of glad tidings وَمُنذِرِينَand warners لِئَلَّاso that not يَكُونَthere is لِلنَّاسِfor mankind عَلَىagainst ٱللَّهِAllah حُجَّةٌۢany argument بَعْدَafter ٱلرُّسُلِ ۚthe Messengers وَكَانَAnd is ٱللَّهُAllah عَزِيزًاAll-Mighty حَكِيمًۭاAll-Wise١٦٥

They were messengers bearing good news and warning, so that mankind would have no excuse before God, once the messengers had been sent: God is almighty and all wise.

166

لَّـٰكِنِBut ٱللَّهُAllah يَشْهَدُbears witness بِمَآto what أَنزَلَHe (has) revealed إِلَيْكَ ۖto you أَنزَلَهُۥHe has sent it down بِعِلْمِهِۦ ۖwith His Knowledge وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُand the Angels يَشْهَدُونَ ۚbear witness وَكَفَىٰAnd is sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah شَهِيدًا(as) a Witness١٦٦

But God Himself bears witness to what He has sent down to you––He sent it down with His full knowledge- the angels too bear witness, though God is sufficient witness.

167

إِنَّIndeed ٱلَّذِينَthose who كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve وَصَدُّوا۟and hinder عَنfrom سَبِيلِ(the) way ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah قَدْsurely ضَلُّوا۟they have strayed ضَلَـٰلًۢاstraying بَعِيدًاfar away١٦٧

Those who have disbelieved and barred others from God’s path have gone far astray;

168

إِنَّIndeed ٱلَّذِينَthose who كَفَرُوا۟disbelieved وَظَلَمُوا۟and did wrong لَمْnot يَكُنِwill ٱللَّهُAllah لِيَغْفِرَ[to] forgive لَهُمْthem وَلَاand not لِيَهْدِيَهُمْHe will guide them طَرِيقًا(to) a way١٦٨

God will not forgive those who have disbelieved and do evil, nor will He guide them to any path

169

إِلَّاExcept طَرِيقَ(the) way جَهَنَّمَ(to) Hell خَـٰلِدِينَabiding فِيهَآin it أَبَدًۭا ۚforever وَكَانَAnd is ذَٰلِكَthat عَلَىfor ٱللَّهِAllah يَسِيرًۭاeasy١٦٩

except that of Hell, where they will remain for ever- this is easy for God.

170

The Messenger has come to you [people] with the truth from your Lord, so believe- that is best for you- for even if you disbelieve, all that is in the heavens and the earth still belongs to God, and He is all knowing and all wise.

171

يَـٰٓأَهْلَO People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ(of) the Book لَا(Do) not تَغْلُوا۟commit excess فِىin دِينِكُمْyour religion وَلَاand (do) not تَقُولُوا۟say عَلَىabout ٱللَّهِAllah إِلَّاexcept ٱلْحَقَّ ۚthe truth إِنَّمَاOnly ٱلْمَسِيحُthe Messiah عِيسَىIsa ٱبْنُson مَرْيَمَ(of) Maryam رَسُولُ(was) a Messenger ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah وَكَلِمَتُهُۥٓand His word أَلْقَىٰهَآwhich He conveyed إِلَىٰto مَرْيَمَMaryam وَرُوحٌۭand a spirit مِّنْهُ ۖfrom Him فَـَٔامِنُوا۟So believe بِٱللَّهِin Allah وَرُسُلِهِۦ ۖand His Messengers وَلَاAnd (do) not تَقُولُوا۟say ثَلَـٰثَةٌ ۚThree ٱنتَهُوا۟desist خَيْرًۭا(it is) better لَّكُمْ ۚfor you إِنَّمَاOnly ٱللَّهُAllah إِلَـٰهٌۭ(is) God وَٰحِدٌۭ ۖOne سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥٓGlory be to Him أَنThat يَكُونَHe (should) have لَهُۥfor Him وَلَدٌۭ ۘa son لَّهُۥTo Him (belongs)مَاwhatever فِى(is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَمَاand whatever فِى(is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗthe earth وَكَفَىٰAnd is sufficient بِٱللَّهِAllah وَكِيلًۭا(as) a Disposer of affairs١٧١

People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion, and do not say anything about God except the truth: the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was nothing more than a messenger of God, His word, directed to Mary, a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers and do not speak of a ‘Trinity’- stop [this], that is better for you- God is only one God, He is far above having a son, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him and He is the best one to trust.

172

لَّنNever يَسْتَنكِفَwill disdain ٱلْمَسِيحُthe Messiah أَنto يَكُونَbe عَبْدًۭاa slave لِّلَّهِof Allah وَلَاand not ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُthe Angels ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ۚthe ones who are near (to Allah)وَمَنAnd whoever يَسْتَنكِفْdisdains عَنْfrom عِبَادَتِهِۦHis worship وَيَسْتَكْبِرْand is arrogant فَسَيَحْشُرُهُمْthen He will gather them إِلَيْهِtowards Him جَمِيعًۭاall together١٧٢

The Messiah would never disdain to be a servant of God, nor would the angels who are close to Him. He will gather before Him all those who disdain His worship and are arrogant:

to those who believe and do good works He will give due rewards and more of His bounty; to those who are disdainful and arrogant He will give an agonizing torment, and they will find no one besides God to protect or help them.

174

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO ٱلنَّاسُmankind قَدْSurely جَآءَكُمhas come to you بُرْهَـٰنٌۭa convincing proof مِّنfrom رَّبِّكُمْyour Lord وَأَنزَلْنَآand We (have) sent down إِلَيْكُمْto you نُورًۭاa light مُّبِينًۭاclear١٧٤

People, convincing proof has come to you from your Lord and We have sent a clear light down to you.

175

فَأَمَّاSo as for ٱلَّذِينَthose who ءَامَنُوا۟believed بِٱللَّهِin Allah وَٱعْتَصَمُوا۟and held fast بِهِۦto Him فَسَيُدْخِلُهُمْthen He will admit them فِىin رَحْمَةٍۢMercy مِّنْهُfrom Himself وَفَضْلٍۢand Bounty وَيَهْدِيهِمْand will guide them إِلَيْهِto Himself صِرَٰطًۭا(on) a way مُّسْتَقِيمًۭاstraight١٧٥

God will admit those who believe in Him and hold fast to Him into His mercy and favour; He will guide them towards Him on a straight path.

176

يَسْتَفْتُونَكَThey seek your ruling قُلِSay ٱللَّهُAllah يُفْتِيكُمْgives you a ruling فِىconcerning ٱلْكَلَـٰلَةِ ۚthe Kalala إِنِif ٱمْرُؤٌا۟a man هَلَكَdied لَيْسَ(and) not لَهُۥhe has وَلَدٌۭa child وَلَهُۥٓand he has أُخْتٌۭa sister فَلَهَاthen for her نِصْفُ(is) a half مَا(of) what تَرَكَ ۚhe left وَهُوَAnd he يَرِثُهَآwill inherit from her إِنif لَّمْnot يَكُنis لَّهَاfor her وَلَدٌۭ ۚa child فَإِنBut if كَانَتَاthere were ٱثْنَتَيْنِtwo females فَلَهُمَاthen for them ٱلثُّلُثَانِtwo thirds مِمَّاof what تَرَكَ ۚhe left وَإِنBut if كَانُوٓا۟they were إِخْوَةًۭbrothers and sisters رِّجَالًۭاmen وَنِسَآءًۭand women فَلِلذَّكَرِthen the male will have مِثْلُlike حَظِّshare ٱلْأُنثَيَيْنِ ۗ(of) the two females يُبَيِّنُmakes clear ٱللَّهُAllah لَكُمْto you أَنlest تَضِلُّوا۟ ۗyou go astray وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah بِكُلِّof every شَىْءٍthing عَلِيمٌۢ(is) All-Knower١٧٦

They ask you [Prophet] for a ruling. Say, ‘God gives you a ruling about inheritance from someone who dies childless with no surviving parents. If a man leaves a sister, she is entitled to half of the inheritance; if she has no child her brother is her sole heir; if there are two sisters, they are entitled to two-thirds of the inheritance between them, but if there are surviving brothers and sisters, the male is entitled to twice the share of the female. God makes this clear to you so that you do not make mistakes: He has full knowledge of everything.’
