The Ornaments of Gold - 89 Ayats - makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

حمٓHa Meem١

Ha Mim

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِBy the Book ٱلْمُبِينِthe clear٢

By the Scripture that makes things clear,

إِنَّاIndeed, We جَعَلْنَـٰهُ(have) made it قُرْءَٰنًاa Quran عَرَبِيًّۭا(in) Arabic لَّعَلَّكُمْso that you may تَعْقِلُونَunderstand٣

We have made it a Quran in Arabic so that you [people] may understand.

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, it فِىٓ(is) in أُمِّ(the) Mother ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ(of) the Book لَدَيْنَاwith Us لَعَلِىٌّsurely exalted حَكِيمٌfull of wisdom٤

It is truly exalted in the Source of Scripture kept with Us, and full of wisdom.

أَفَنَضْرِبُThen should We take away عَنكُمُfrom you ٱلذِّكْرَthe Reminder صَفْحًاdisregarding (you)أَنbecause كُنتُمْyou are قَوْمًۭاa people مُّسْرِفِينَtransgressing٥

Should We ignore you and turn this revelation away from you because you are insolent people?

وَكَمْAnd how many أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent مِنof نَّبِىٍّۢa Prophet فِىamong ٱلْأَوَّلِينَthe former (people)٦

We have sent many a prophet to earlier people

وَمَاAnd not يَأْتِيهِمcame to them مِّنany Prophet نَّبِىٍّany Prophet إِلَّاbut كَانُوا۟they used to بِهِۦmock at him يَسْتَهْزِءُونَmock at him٧

and they mocked every one of them,

فَأَهْلَكْنَآThen We destroyed أَشَدَّstronger مِنْهُمthan them بَطْشًۭا(in) power وَمَضَىٰand has passed مَثَلُ(the) example ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)٨

so We have destroyed mightier people than [the disbelievers of Mecca] and their example has gone down in history.

وَلَئِنAnd if سَأَلْتَهُمyou ask them مَّنْWho خَلَقَcreated ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earth لَيَقُولُنَّThey will surely say خَلَقَهُنَّCreated them ٱلْعَزِيزُthe All-Mighty ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower٩

If you [Prophet] ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and earth?’ they are sure to say, ‘They were created by the Almighty, the All Knowing.’

ٱلَّذِىThe One Who جَعَلَmade لَكُمُfor you ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth مَهْدًۭاa bed وَجَعَلَand made لَكُمْfor you فِيهَاtherein سُبُلًۭاroads لَّعَلَّكُمْso that you may تَهْتَدُونَ(be) guided١٠

It is He who smoothed out the earth for you and traced out routes on it for you to find your way,

وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Who نَزَّلَsends down مِنَfrom ٱلسَّمَآءِthe sky مَآءًۢwater بِقَدَرٍۢin (due) measure فَأَنشَرْنَاthen We revive بِهِۦwith it بَلْدَةًۭa land مَّيْتًۭا ۚdead كَذَٰلِكَthus تُخْرَجُونَyou will be brought forth١١

who sends water down from the sky in due measure––We resurrect dead land with it, and likewise you will be resurrected from the grave––

وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Who خَلَقَcreated ٱلْأَزْوَٰجَthe pairs كُلَّهَاall of them وَجَعَلَand made لَكُمfor you مِّنَ[of]ٱلْفُلْكِthe ships وَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِand the cattle مَاwhat تَرْكَبُونَyou ride١٢

who created every kind of thing, who gave you ships and animals to ride on

so that you may remember your Lord’s grace when you are seated on them and say, ‘Glory be to Him who has given us control over this; we could not have done it by ourselves.

وَإِنَّآAnd indeed, we إِلَىٰto رَبِّنَاour Lord لَمُنقَلِبُونَwill surely return١٤

Truly it is to our Lord that we are returning.’

وَجَعَلُوا۟But they attribute لَهُۥto Him مِنْfrom عِبَادِهِۦHis slaves جُزْءًا ۚa portion إِنَّIndeed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman لَكَفُورٌۭsurely (is) clearly ungrateful مُّبِينٌsurely (is) clearly ungrateful١٥

Yet they assign some of His own servants to Him as offspring!Man is clearly ungrateful!

أَمِOr ٱتَّخَذَhas He taken مِمَّاof what يَخْلُقُHe has created بَنَاتٍۢdaughters وَأَصْفَىٰكُمand He has chosen (for) you بِٱلْبَنِينَsons١٦

Has He taken daughters for Himself and favoured you with sons?

وَإِذَاAnd when بُشِّرَis given good news أَحَدُهُم(to) one of them بِمَاof what ضَرَبَhe sets up لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِfor the Most Gracious مَثَلًۭا(as) a likeness ظَلَّbecomes وَجْهُهُۥhis face مُسْوَدًّۭاdark وَهُوَand he كَظِيمٌ(is) filled with grief١٧

When one of them is given news of the birth of a daughter, such as he so readily ascribes to the Lord of Mercy, his face grows dark and he is filled with gloom-

أَوَمَنThen (is one) who يُنَشَّؤُا۟is brought up فِىin ٱلْحِلْيَةِornaments وَهُوَand he فِىin ٱلْخِصَامِthe dispute غَيْرُ(is) not مُبِينٍۢclear١٨

‘Someone who is brought up amongst trinkets, who cannot put together a clear argument?’

وَجَعَلُوا۟And they made ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَthe Angels ٱلَّذِينَthose who هُمْthemselves عِبَـٰدُ(are) slaves ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ(of) the Most Gracious إِنَـٰثًا ۚfemales أَشَهِدُوا۟Did they witness خَلْقَهُمْ ۚtheir creation سَتُكْتَبُWill be recorded شَهَـٰدَتُهُمْtheir testimony وَيُسْـَٔلُونَand they will be questioned١٩

They consider the angels- God’s servants- to be female. Did they witness their creation? Their claim will be put on record and they will be questioned about it.

وَقَالُوا۟And they say لَوْIf شَآءَhad willed ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُthe Most Gracious مَاwe would not have worshipped them عَبَدْنَـٰهُم ۗwe would not have worshipped them مَّاNot لَهُمthey have بِذَٰلِكَabout that مِنْany عِلْمٍ ۖknowledge إِنْNothing هُمْthey (do)إِلَّاbut يَخْرُصُونَlie٢٠

They say, ‘If the Lord of Mercy had willed it, we would not have worshipped them,’ but they do not know that- they are only guessing-

أَمْOr ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْhave We given them كِتَـٰبًۭاa book مِّنbefore it قَبْلِهِۦbefore it فَهُمso they بِهِۦto it مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ(are) holding fast٢١

or have We perhaps given them a book before this one, to which they hold fast?

بَلْNay قَالُوٓا۟they say إِنَّاIndeed, we وَجَدْنَآ[we] found ءَابَآءَنَاour forefathers عَلَىٰٓupon أُمَّةٍۢa religion وَإِنَّاand indeed, we عَلَىٰٓon ءَاثَـٰرِهِمtheir footsteps مُّهْتَدُونَ(are) guided٢٢

No indeed! They say, ‘We saw our fathers following this tradition; we are guided by their footsteps.’

When-ever We sent a messenger before you to warn a township, those corrupted by wealth said, in the same way, ‘We saw our fathers following this tradition; we are only following in their footsteps.’

۞ قَـٰلَHe said أَوَلَوْEven if جِئْتُكُمI brought you بِأَهْدَىٰbetter guidance مِمَّاthan what وَجَدتُّمْyou found عَلَيْهِon it ءَابَآءَكُمْ ۖyour forefathers قَالُوٓا۟They said إِنَّاIndeed, we بِمَآwith what أُرْسِلْتُمyou are sent بِهِۦwith [it]كَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers٢٤

The messenger said, ‘Even though I bring you a truer religion than what you saw your fathers following?’ and they replied, ‘But we do not believe the message you bring.’

فَٱنتَقَمْنَاSo We took retribution مِنْهُمْ ۖfrom them فَٱنظُرْThen see كَيْفَhow كَانَwas عَـٰقِبَةُ(the) end ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ(of) the deniers٢٥

We punished them: think about how those who rejected the Truth met their end.

وَإِذْAnd when قَالَIbrahim Said إِبْرَٰهِيمُIbrahim Said لِأَبِيهِto his father وَقَوْمِهِۦٓand his people إِنَّنِىIndeed, I (am)بَرَآءٌۭdisassociated مِّمَّاfrom what تَعْبُدُونَyou worship٢٦

Abraham said to his father and his people, ‘I renounce what you worship.

إِلَّاExcept ٱلَّذِىthe One Who فَطَرَنِىcreated me فَإِنَّهُۥand indeed, He سَيَهْدِينِwill guide me٢٧

I worship only Him who created me, and it is He who will guide me,’

وَجَعَلَهَاAnd he made it كَلِمَةًۢa word بَاقِيَةًۭlasting فِىamong عَقِبِهِۦhis descendents لَعَلَّهُمْso that they may يَرْجِعُونَreturn٢٨

and he bequeathed these words to his descendants so that they might return [to God].

بَلْNay مَتَّعْتُI gave enjoyment هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ(to) these وَءَابَآءَهُمْand their forefathers حَتَّىٰuntil جَآءَهُمُcame to them ٱلْحَقُّthe truth وَرَسُولٌۭand a Messenger مُّبِينٌۭclear٢٩

I have let these people and their fathers enjoy long lives, and now I have given them the Truth and a messenger to make things clear-

وَلَمَّاAnd when جَآءَهُمُcame to them ٱلْحَقُّthe truth قَالُوا۟they said هَـٰذَاThis سِحْرٌۭ(is) magic وَإِنَّاand indeed, we بِهِۦof it كَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers٣٠

yet when the Truth came to them, they said, ‘This is sorcery. We do not believe in it,’

وَقَالُوا۟And they say لَوْلَاWhy not نُزِّلَwas sent down هَـٰذَاthis ٱلْقُرْءَانُthe Quran عَلَىٰto رَجُلٍۢa man مِّنَfrom ٱلْقَرْيَتَيْنِthe two towns عَظِيمٍgreat٣١

and they said, ‘Why was this Quran not sent down to a distinguished man, from either of the two cities?’

Are they the ones who share out your Lord’s grace? We are the ones who give them their share of livelihood in this world and We have raised some of them above others in rank, so that some may take others into service: your Lord’s grace is better than anything they accumulate.

وَلَوْلَآAnd if not أَنthat يَكُونَ(would) become ٱلنَّاسُ[the] mankind أُمَّةًۭa community وَٰحِدَةًۭone لَّجَعَلْنَاWe (would have) made لِمَنfor (one) who يَكْفُرُdisbelieves بِٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِin the Most Gracious لِبُيُوتِهِمْfor their houses سُقُفًۭاroofs مِّنof فِضَّةٍۢsilver وَمَعَارِجَand stairways عَلَيْهَاupon which يَظْهَرُونَthey mount٣٣

If it were not that all mankind might have become a single nation [of disbelievers], We could have given all those who disbelieve in the Lord of Mercy houses with roofs of silver, sweeping staircases to ascend,

وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْAnd for their houses أَبْوَٰبًۭاdoors وَسُرُرًاand couches عَلَيْهَاupon which يَتَّكِـُٔونَthey recline٣٤

massive gates, couches to sit on,

وَزُخْرُفًۭا ۚAnd ornaments of gold وَإِنAnd not (is)كُلُّall ذَٰلِكَthat لَمَّاbut مَتَـٰعُan enjoyment ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the life ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ(of) the world وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُAnd the Hereafter عِندَwith رَبِّكَyour Lord لِلْمُتَّقِينَ(is) for the righteous٣٥

and golden ornaments. All of these are mere enjoyments of this life; your Lord reserves the next life for those who take heed of Him.

وَمَنAnd whoever يَعْشُturns away عَنfrom ذِكْرِ(the) remembrance ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ(of) the Most Gracious نُقَيِّضْWe appoint لَهُۥfor him شَيْطَـٰنًۭاa devil فَهُوَthen he لَهُۥ(is) to him قَرِينٌۭa companion٣٦

We assign an evil one as a comrade for whoever turns away from the revelations of the Lord of Mercy:

وَإِنَّهُمْAnd indeed, they لَيَصُدُّونَهُمْsurely, turn them عَنِfrom ٱلسَّبِيلِthe Path وَيَحْسَبُونَand they think أَنَّهُمthat they مُّهْتَدُونَ(are) guided٣٧

evil ones bar people from the right path, even though they may think they are well guided.

حَتَّىٰٓUntil إِذَاwhen جَآءَنَاhe comes to Us قَالَhe says يَـٰلَيْتَO would that بَيْنِىbetween me وَبَيْنَكَand between you بُعْدَ(were the) distance ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ(of) the East and the West فَبِئْسَHow wretched is ٱلْقَرِينُthe companion٣٨

When such a person comes to Us, he will say [to his comrade], ‘If only you had been as far away from me as east is from west. What an evil comrade!’

وَلَنAnd never يَنفَعَكُمُwill benefit you ٱلْيَوْمَthe Day إِذwhen ظَّلَمْتُمْyou have wronged أَنَّكُمْthat you فِى(will be) in ٱلْعَذَابِthe punishment مُشْتَرِكُونَsharing٣٩

[It will be said to them], ‘You have done wrong. Having partners in punishment will not console you today.’

أَفَأَنتَThen can you تُسْمِعُcause to hear ٱلصُّمَّthe deaf أَوْor تَهْدِىguide ٱلْعُمْىَthe blind وَمَنand (one) who كَانَis فِىin ضَلَـٰلٍۢan error مُّبِينٍۢclear٤٠

Can you [Prophet] make the deaf hear? Or guide either the blind or those who are in gross error?

فَإِمَّاAnd whether نَذْهَبَنَّWe take you away بِكَWe take you away فَإِنَّاthen indeed, We مِنْهُمfrom them مُّنتَقِمُونَ(will) take retribution٤١

Either We shall take you away and punish them- indeed We will-

أَوْOr نُرِيَنَّكَWe show you ٱلَّذِىthat which وَعَدْنَـٰهُمْWe have promised them فَإِنَّاthen indeed, We عَلَيْهِمover them مُّقْتَدِرُونَhave full power٤٢

or We shall let you witness the punishment We threatened them with; We have full power over them.

فَٱسْتَمْسِكْSo hold fast بِٱلَّذِىٓto that which أُوحِىَis revealed إِلَيْكَ ۖto you إِنَّكَIndeed, you عَلَىٰ(are) on صِرَٰطٍۢa Path مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢStraight٤٣

Hold fast to what has been revealed to you- you truly are on the right path-

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, it لَذِكْرٌۭ(is) surely, a Reminder لَّكَfor you وَلِقَوْمِكَ ۖand your people وَسَوْفَand soon تُسْـَٔلُونَyou will be questioned٤٤

for it is a reminder for you and your people: you will all be questioned.

وَسْـَٔلْAnd ask مَنْ(those) whom أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent مِنbefore you قَبْلِكَbefore you مِنof رُّسُلِنَآOur Messengers أَجَعَلْنَاdid We make مِنbesides دُونِbesides ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Gracious ءَالِهَةًۭgods يُعْبَدُونَto be worshipped٤٥

Ask the prophets We sent before you: ‘Did We ever appoint any gods to be worshipped besides the Lord of Mercy?’

وَلَقَدْAnd certainly أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent مُوسَىٰMusa بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآwith Our Signs إِلَىٰto فِرْعَوْنَFiraun وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦand his chiefs فَقَالَand he said إِنِّىIndeed, I am رَسُولُa Messenger رَبِّ(of the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds٤٦

We sent Moses to Pharaoh and his courtiers and he said, ‘I am truly a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds,’

فَلَمَّاBut when جَآءَهُمhe came to them بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآwith Our Signs إِذَاbehold هُمThey مِّنْهَاat them يَضْحَكُونَlaughed٤٧

but when he presented Our signs to them, they laughed,

وَمَاAnd not نُرِيهِمWe showed them مِّنْof ءَايَةٍa Sign إِلَّاbut هِىَit أَكْبَرُ(was) greater مِنْthan أُخْتِهَا ۖits sister وَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمand We seized them بِٱلْعَذَابِwith the punishment لَعَلَّهُمْso that they may يَرْجِعُونَreturn٤٨

even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We inflicted torment on them so that they might return to the right path.

وَقَالُوا۟And they said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَO ٱلسَّاحِرُ[the] magician ٱدْعُInvoke لَنَاfor us رَبَّكَyour Lord بِمَاby what عَهِدَHe has made covenant عِندَكَwith you إِنَّنَاIndeed, we لَمُهْتَدُونَ(will) surely be guided٤٩

They said, ‘Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance,’

فَلَمَّاBut when كَشَفْنَاWe removed عَنْهُمُfrom them ٱلْعَذَابَthe punishment إِذَاbehold هُمْThey يَنكُثُونَbroke (their word)٥٠

but as soon as We relieved their torment they broke their word.

وَنَادَىٰAnd called out فِرْعَوْنُFiraun فِىamong قَوْمِهِۦhis people قَالَhe said يَـٰقَوْمِO my people أَلَيْسَIs not لِىfor me مُلْكُ(the) kingdom مِصْرَ(of) Egypt وَهَـٰذِهِand these ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ[the] rivers تَجْرِىflowing مِنunderneath me تَحْتِىٓ ۖunderneath me أَفَلَاThen do not تُبْصِرُونَyou see٥١

Pharaoh proclaimed to his people, ‘My people, is the Kingdom of Egypt not mine? And these rivers that flow at my feet, are they not mine? Do you not see?

أَمْOr أَنَا۠am I خَيْرٌۭbetter مِّنْthan هَـٰذَاthis ٱلَّذِىone who هُوَhe مَهِينٌۭ(is) insignificant وَلَاand hardly يَكَادُand hardly يُبِينُclear٥٢

Am I not better than this contemptible wretch who can scarcely express himself?

فَلَوْلَآThen why not أُلْقِىَare placed عَلَيْهِon him أَسْوِرَةٌۭbracelets مِّنof ذَهَبٍgold أَوْor جَآءَcome مَعَهُwith him ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُthe Angels مُقْتَرِنِينَaccompanying (him)٥٣

Why has he not been given any gold bracelets? Why have no angels come to accompany him?’

فَٱسْتَخَفَّSo he bluffed قَوْمَهُۥhis people فَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚand they obeyed him إِنَّهُمْIndeed, they كَانُوا۟were قَوْمًۭاa people فَـٰسِقِينَdefiantly disobedient٥٤

In this way he moved his people to accept and they obeyed him- they were perverse people.

فَلَمَّآSo when ءَاسَفُونَاthey angered Us ٱنتَقَمْنَاWe took retribution مِنْهُمْfrom them فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْand We drowned them أَجْمَعِينَall٥٥

When they provoked Us, We punished and drowned them all:

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْAnd We made them سَلَفًۭاa precedent وَمَثَلًۭاand an example لِّلْـَٔاخِرِينَfor the later (generations)٥٦

We made them a lesson and an example for later people.

۞ وَلَمَّاAnd when ضُرِبَis presented ٱبْنُ(the) son مَرْيَمَ(of) Maryam مَثَلًا(as) an example إِذَاbehold قَوْمُكَYour people مِنْهُabout it يَصِدُّونَlaughed aloud٥٧

When the son of Mary is cited as an example, your people [Prophet] laugh and jeer,

وَقَالُوٓا۟And they said ءَأَـٰلِهَتُنَاAre our gods خَيْرٌbetter أَمْor هُوَ ۚhe مَاNot ضَرَبُوهُthey present it لَكَto you إِلَّاexcept جَدَلًۢا ۚ(for) argument بَلْNay هُمْthey قَوْمٌ(are) a people خَصِمُونَargumentative٥٨

saying, ‘Are our gods better or him?’- they cite him only to challenge you: they are a contentious people-

إِنْNot هُوَhe إِلَّا(was) except عَبْدٌa slave أَنْعَمْنَاWe bestowed Our favor عَلَيْهِon him وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُand We made him مَثَلًۭاan example لِّبَنِىٓfor (the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَfor (the) Children of Israel٥٩

but he is only a servant We favoured and made an example for the Children of Israel:

وَلَوْAnd if نَشَآءُWe willed لَجَعَلْنَاsurely We (could have) made مِنكُمamong you مَّلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭAngels فِىin ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth يَخْلُفُونَsucceeding٦٠

if it had been Our will, We could have made you angels, succeeding one another on earth.

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, it لَعِلْمٌۭsurely (is) a knowledge لِّلسَّاعَةِof the Hour فَلَاSo (do) not تَمْتَرُنَّ(be) doubtful بِهَاabout it وَٱتَّبِعُونِ ۚand follow Me هَـٰذَاThis صِرَٰطٌۭ(is the) Path مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭStraight٦١

This [Quran] gives knowledge of the Hour: do not doubt it. Follow Me for this is the right path;

وَلَاAnd (let) not يَصُدَّنَّكُمُavert you ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ ۖthe Shaitaan إِنَّهُۥIndeed, he لَكُمْ(is) for you عَدُوٌّۭan enemy مُّبِينٌۭclear٦٢

do not let Satan hinder you, for he is your sworn enemy.

وَلَمَّاAnd when جَآءَcame عِيسَىٰIsa بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِwith clear proofs قَالَhe said قَدْVerily جِئْتُكُمI have come to you بِٱلْحِكْمَةِwith wisdom وَلِأُبَيِّنَand that I make clear لَكُمto you بَعْضَsome ٱلَّذِى(of) that which تَخْتَلِفُونَyou differ فِيهِ ۖin it فَٱتَّقُوا۟So fear ٱللَّهَAllah وَأَطِيعُونِand obey me٦٣

When Jesus came with clear signs he said, ‘I have brought you wisdom; I have come to clear up some of your differences for you. Be mindful of God and obey me:

إِنَّIndeed ٱللَّهَAllah هُوَHe رَبِّى(is) my Lord وَرَبُّكُمْand your Lord فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚso worship Him هَـٰذَاThis صِرَٰطٌۭ(is) a Path مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭStraight٦٤

God is my Lord and your Lord. Serve Him: this is the straight path.’

فَٱخْتَلَفَBut differed ٱلْأَحْزَابُthe factions مِنۢfrom بَيْنِهِمْ ۖamong them فَوَيْلٌۭso woe لِّلَّذِينَto those who ظَلَمُوا۟wronged مِنْfrom عَذَابِ(the) punishment يَوْمٍ(of the) Day أَلِيمٍpainful٦٥

Yet still the different factions among them disagreed- woe to the evildoers: they will suffer the torment of a grievous day!-

هَلْAre يَنظُرُونَthey waiting إِلَّاexcept ٱلسَّاعَةَ(for) the Hour أَنthat تَأْتِيَهُمit should come on them بَغْتَةًۭsuddenly وَهُمْwhile they لَا(do) not يَشْعُرُونَperceive٦٦

what are they waiting for but the Hour, which will come upon them suddenly and take them unawares?

ٱلْأَخِلَّآءُFriends يَوْمَئِذٍۭthat Day بَعْضُهُمْsome of them لِبَعْضٍto others عَدُوٌّ(will be) enemies إِلَّاexcept ٱلْمُتَّقِينَthe righteous٦٧

On that Day, friends will become each other’s enemies. Not so the righteous-

يَـٰعِبَادِO My slaves لَاNo خَوْفٌfear عَلَيْكُمُon you ٱلْيَوْمَthis Day وَلَآand not أَنتُمْyou تَحْزَنُونَwill grieve٦٨

‘My servants, there is no fear for you today, nor shall you grieve’––

ٱلَّذِينَThose who ءَامَنُوا۟believed بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاin Our Verses وَكَانُوا۟and were مُسْلِمِينَsubmissive٦٩

those who believed in Our revelations and devoted themselves to Us.

ٱدْخُلُوا۟Enter ٱلْجَنَّةَParadise أَنتُمْyou وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْand your spouses تُحْبَرُونَdelighted٧٠

‘Enter Paradise, you and your spouses: you will be filled with joy.’

يُطَافُWill be circulated عَلَيْهِمfor them بِصِحَافٍۢplates مِّنof ذَهَبٍۢgold وَأَكْوَابٍۢ ۖand cups وَفِيهَاAnd therein مَا(is) what تَشْتَهِيهِdesires ٱلْأَنفُسُthe souls وَتَلَذُّand delights ٱلْأَعْيُنُ ۖthe eyes وَأَنتُمْand you فِيهَاtherein خَـٰلِدُونَwill abide forever٧١

Dishes and goblets of gold will be passed around them with all that their souls desire and their eyes delight in. ‘There you will remain:

وَتِلْكَAnd this ٱلْجَنَّةُ(is) the Paradise ٱلَّتِىٓwhich أُورِثْتُمُوهَاyou are made to inherit بِمَاfor what كُنتُمْyou used to تَعْمَلُونَdo٧٢

this is the Garden you are given as your own, because of what you used to do,

لَكُمْFor you فِيهَاtherein فَـٰكِهَةٌۭ(are) fruits كَثِيرَةٌۭabundant مِّنْهَاfrom it تَأْكُلُونَyou will eat٧٣

and there is abundant fruit in it for you to eat.’

إِنَّIndeed ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminals فِى(will be) in عَذَابِ(the) punishment جَهَنَّمَ(of) Hell خَـٰلِدُونَabiding forever٧٤

But the evildoers will remain in Hell’s punishment,

لَاNot يُفَتَّرُwill it subside عَنْهُمْfor them وَهُمْand they فِيهِin it مُبْلِسُونَ(will) despair٧٥

from which there is no relief: they will remain in utter despair.

وَمَاAnd not ظَلَمْنَـٰهُمْWe wronged them وَلَـٰكِنbut كَانُوا۟they were هُمُthemselves ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَwrongdoers٧٦

We never wronged them; they were the ones who did wrong.

وَنَادَوْا۟And they will call يَـٰمَـٰلِكُO Malik لِيَقْضِLet put an end عَلَيْنَاto us رَبُّكَ ۖyour Lord قَالَHe (will) say إِنَّكُمIndeed, you مَّـٰكِثُونَ(will) remain٧٧

They will cry, ‘Malik, if only your Lord would finish us off,’ but he will answer, ‘No! You are here to stay.’

لَقَدْCertainly جِئْنَـٰكُمWe have brought you بِٱلْحَقِّthe truth وَلَـٰكِنَّbut أَكْثَرَكُمْmost of you لِلْحَقِّto the truth كَـٰرِهُونَ(are) averse٧٨

We have brought you the Truth but most of you despise it.

أَمْOr أَبْرَمُوٓا۟have they determined أَمْرًۭاan affair فَإِنَّاThen indeed, We مُبْرِمُونَ(are) determined٧٩

Have these disbelievers thought up some scheme? We too have been scheming.

أَمْOr يَحْسَبُونَ(do) they think أَنَّاthat We لَا(can) not نَسْمَعُhear سِرَّهُمْtheir secret(s)وَنَجْوَىٰهُم ۚand their private counsel(s)بَلَىٰNay وَرُسُلُنَاand Our Messengers لَدَيْهِمْwith them يَكْتُبُونَare recording٨٠

Do they think We cannot hear their secret talk and their private counsel? Yes we can: Our messengers are at their sides, recording everything.

قُلْSay إِنIf كَانَhad لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Gracious وَلَدٌۭa son فَأَنَا۠Then, I أَوَّلُ(would be the) first ٱلْعَـٰبِدِينَ(of) the worshippers٨١

Say [Prophet], ‘If the Lord of Mercy [truly] had offspring I would be the first to worship [them], but-

سُبْحَـٰنَGlory be رَبِّ(to the) Lord ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earth رَبِّ(the) Lord ٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Throne عَمَّاabove what يَصِفُونَthey ascribe٨٢

exalted be the Lord of the heavens and earth, the Lord of the Throne- He is far above their false descriptions.’

فَذَرْهُمْSo leave them يَخُوضُوا۟(to) converse vainly وَيَلْعَبُوا۟and play حَتَّىٰuntil يُلَـٰقُوا۟they meet يَوْمَهُمُtheir Day ٱلَّذِىwhich يُوعَدُونَthey are promised٨٣

Leave them to wade in deeper and play about, until they face the Day they have been promised.

وَهُوَAnd He ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Who فِى(is) in ٱلسَّمَآءِthe heaven إِلَـٰهٌۭGod وَفِىand in ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth إِلَـٰهٌۭ ۚGod وَهُوَAnd He ٱلْحَكِيمُ(is) the All-Wise ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower٨٤

It is He who is God in heaven and God on earth; He is the All Wise, the All Knowing;

وَتَبَارَكَAnd blessed (is)ٱلَّذِىthe One Who لَهُۥto Whom مُلْكُ(belongs the) dominion ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earth وَمَاand whatever بَيْنَهُمَا(is) between both of them وَعِندَهُۥand with Him عِلْمُ(is the) knowledge ٱلسَّاعَةِ(of) the Hour وَإِلَيْهِand to Him تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returned٨٥

Exalted is He who has control of the heavens and earth and everything between them; He has knowledge of the Hour; you will all be returned to Him.

وَلَاAnd not يَمْلِكُhave power ٱلَّذِينَthose whom يَدْعُونَthey invoke مِنbesides Him دُونِهِbesides Him ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ(for) the intercession إِلَّاexcept مَنwho شَهِدَtestifies بِٱلْحَقِّto the truth وَهُمْand they يَعْلَمُونَknow٨٦

Those gods they invoke besides Him have no power of intercession, unlike those who bore witness to the truth and recognized it.

وَلَئِنAnd if سَأَلْتَهُمyou ask them مَّنْwho خَلَقَهُمْcreated them لَيَقُولُنَّthey will certainly say ٱللَّهُ ۖAllah فَأَنَّىٰThen how يُؤْفَكُونَare they deluded٨٧

If you [Prophet] ask them who created them they are sure to say, ‘God,’ so why are they so deluded?

وَقِيلِهِۦAnd his saying يَـٰرَبِّO my Lord إِنَّIndeed هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِthese قَوْمٌۭ(are) a people لَّا(who do) not يُؤْمِنُونَbelieve٨٨

The Prophet has said, ‘My Lord, truly these are people who do not believe,’

فَٱصْفَحْSo turn away عَنْهُمْfrom them وَقُلْand say سَلَـٰمٌۭ ۚPeace فَسَوْفَBut soon يَعْلَمُونَthey will know٨٩

but turn away from them and say, ‘Peace’: they will come to know.
