in the alternation of night and day, in the rain God provides, sending it down from the sky and reviving the dead earth with it, and in His shifting of the winds there are signs for those who use their reason.

تِلْكَThese ءَايَـٰتُ(are the) Verses ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah نَتْلُوهَاWe recite them عَلَيْكَto you بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖin truth فَبِأَىِّThen in what حَدِيثٍۭstatement بَعْدَafter ٱللَّهِAllah وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦand His Verses يُؤْمِنُونَwill they believe٦

These are God’s signs that We recount to you [Prophet, to show] the Truth. If they deny God and His revelations, what message will they believe in?

وَيْلٌۭWoe لِّكُلِّto every أَفَّاكٍliar أَثِيمٍۢsinful٧

Woe to every lying sinful person

يَسْمَعُWho hears ءَايَـٰتِ(the) Verses ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah تُتْلَىٰrecited عَلَيْهِto him ثُمَّthen يُصِرُّpersists مُسْتَكْبِرًۭاarrogantly كَأَنas if لَّمْnot يَسْمَعْهَا ۖhe heard them فَبَشِّرْهُSo give him tidings بِعَذَابٍ(of) a punishment أَلِيمٍۢpainful٨

who hears God’s revelations being recited to him, yet persists in his arrogance as if he had never heard them––[Prophet] bring him news of a painful torment!––

وَإِذَاAnd when عَلِمَhe knows مِنْof ءَايَـٰتِنَاOur Verses شَيْـًٔاanything ٱتَّخَذَهَاhe takes them هُزُوًا ۚ(in) ridicule أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose لَهُمْfor them عَذَابٌۭ(is) a punishment مُّهِينٌۭhumiliating٩

who, if he knows anything about Our revelations, ridicules it! Such people will have a humiliating torment:

مِّنBefore them وَرَآئِهِمْBefore them جَهَنَّمُ ۖ(is) Hell وَلَاand not يُغْنِىwill avail عَنْهُمthem مَّاwhat كَسَبُوا۟they had earned شَيْـًۭٔاanything وَلَاand not مَاwhat ٱتَّخَذُوا۟they had taken مِنbesides دُونِbesides ٱللَّهِAllah أَوْلِيَآءَ ۖ(as) protectors وَلَهُمْAnd for them عَذَابٌ(is) a punishment عَظِيمٌgreat١٠

Hell lurks behind them and their gains will not benefit them, nor will those beings they took as protectors beside God––a tremendous torment awaits them.

هَـٰذَاThis هُدًۭى ۖ(is) guidance وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve بِـَٔايَـٰتِin (the) Verses رَبِّهِمْ(of) their Lord لَهُمْfor them عَذَابٌۭ(is) a punishment مِّنof رِّجْزٍfilth أَلِيمٌpainful١١

This is true guidance; those who reject their Lord’s revelations will have a woeful torment.

۞ ٱللَّهُAllah ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Who سَخَّرَsubjected لَكُمُto you ٱلْبَحْرَthe sea لِتَجْرِىَthat may sail ٱلْفُلْكُthe ships فِيهِtherein بِأَمْرِهِۦby His Command وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟and that you may seek مِنof فَضْلِهِۦHis Bounty وَلَعَلَّكُمْand that you may تَشْكُرُونَgive thanks١٢

It is God who subjected the sea for you––ships sail on it by His command so that you can seek His bounty and give Him thanks––

وَسَخَّرَAnd He has subjected لَكُمto you مَّاwhatever فِى(is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَمَاand whatever فِى(is) in ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth جَمِيعًۭاall مِّنْهُ ۚfrom Him إِنَّIndeed فِىin ذَٰلِكَthat لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely are Signs لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a people يَتَفَكَّرُونَwho give thought١٣

He has subjected all that is in the heavens and the earth for your benefit, as a gift from Him. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect.

قُلSay لِّلَّذِينَto those who ءَامَنُوا۟believe يَغْفِرُوا۟(to) forgive لِلَّذِينَthose who لَا(do) not يَرْجُونَhope أَيَّامَ(for the) days ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah لِيَجْزِىَthat He may recompense قَوْمًۢاa people بِمَاfor what كَانُوا۟they used to يَكْسِبُونَearn١٤

Tell the believers to forgive those who do not fear God’s days [of punishment]––He will requite people for what they have done.

مَنْWhoever عَمِلَdoes صَـٰلِحًۭاa righteous deed فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖthen it is for his soul وَمَنْand whoever أَسَآءَdoes evil فَعَلَيْهَا ۖthen it (is) against it ثُمَّThen إِلَىٰto رَبِّكُمْyour Lord تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returned١٥

Whoever does good benefits himself, and whoever does evil harms himself: you will all be returned to your Lord.

وَلَقَدْAnd certainly ءَاتَيْنَاWe gave بَنِىٓ(the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(the) Children of Israel ٱلْكِتَـٰبَthe Book وَٱلْحُكْمَand the wisdom وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَand the Prophethood وَرَزَقْنَـٰهُمand We provided them مِّنَof ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِthe good things وَفَضَّلْنَـٰهُمْand We preferred them عَلَىover ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَthe worlds١٦

We gave scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to the Children of Israel; We provided them with good things and favoured them above others;

We gave them clear proof in matters [of religion]. They differed among themselves out of mutual rivalry, only after knowledge came to them: on the Day of Resurrection your Lord will judge between them regarding their differences.

ثُمَّThen جَعَلْنَـٰكَWe put you عَلَىٰon شَرِيعَةٍۢan ordained way مِّنَof ٱلْأَمْرِthe matter فَٱتَّبِعْهَاso follow it وَلَاand (do) not تَتَّبِعْfollow أَهْوَآءَ(the) desires ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those who لَا(do) not يَعْلَمُونَknow١٨

Now We have set you [Muhammad] on a clear religious path, so follow it. Do not follow the desires of those who lack [true] knowledge-

إِنَّهُمْIndeed, they لَنnever يُغْنُوا۟will avail عَنكَyou مِنَagainst ٱللَّهِAllah شَيْـًۭٔا ۚ(in) anything وَإِنَّAnd indeed ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoers بَعْضُهُمْsome of them أَوْلِيَآءُ(are) allies بَعْضٍۢ ۖ(of) others وَٱللَّهُand Allah وَلِىُّ(is the) Protector ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ(of) the righteous١٩

they cannot help you against God in any way. Wrongdoers only have each other to protect them; the righteous have God Himself as their protector.

هَـٰذَاThis بَصَـٰٓئِرُ(is) enlightenment لِلنَّاسِfor mankind وَهُدًۭىand guidance وَرَحْمَةٌۭand mercy لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a people يُوقِنُونَwho are certain٢٠

This [revelation] is a means of insight for people, a source of guidance and mercy for those of sure faith.

أَمْDo حَسِبَthink ٱلَّذِينَthose who ٱجْتَرَحُوا۟commit ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِevil deeds أَنthat نَّجْعَلَهُمْWe will make them كَٱلَّذِينَlike those who ءَامَنُوا۟believed وَعَمِلُوا۟and did ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deeds سَوَآءًۭequal مَّحْيَاهُمْ(in) their life وَمَمَاتُهُمْ ۚand their death سَآءَEvil is مَاwhat يَحْكُمُونَthey judge٢١

Do those who commit evil deeds really think that We will deal with them in the same way as those who believe and do righteous deeds, that they will be alike in their living and their dying? How badly they judge!

وَخَلَقَAnd Allah created ٱللَّهُAnd Allah created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earth بِٱلْحَقِّin truth وَلِتُجْزَىٰand that may be recompensed كُلُّevery نَفْسٍۭsoul بِمَاfor what كَسَبَتْit has earned وَهُمْand they لَاwill not be wronged يُظْلَمُونَwill not be wronged٢٢

God created the heavens and earth for a true purpose: to reward each soul according to its deeds. They will not be wronged.

[Prophet], consider the one who has taken his own desire as a god, whom God allows to stray in the face of knowledge, sealing his ears and heart and covering his eyes- who can guide such a person after God [has done this]? Will you [people] not take heed?

They say, ‘There is only our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time destroys us.’ They have no knowledge of this; they only follow guesswork. Their only argument,

وَإِذَاAnd when تُتْلَىٰare recited عَلَيْهِمْto them ءَايَـٰتُنَاOur Verses بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢclear مَّاnot كَانَis حُجَّتَهُمْtheir argument إِلَّآexcept أَنthat قَالُوا۟they say ٱئْتُوا۟Bring بِـَٔابَآئِنَآour forefathers إِنif كُنتُمْyou are صَـٰدِقِينَtruthful٢٥

when Our clear revelations are recited to them, is to say, ‘Bring back our forefathers if what you say is true.’

قُلِSay ٱللَّهُAllah يُحْيِيكُمْgives you life ثُمَّthen يُمِيتُكُمْcauses you to die ثُمَّthen يَجْمَعُكُمْHe will gather you إِلَىٰto يَوْمِ(the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection لَاno رَيْبَdoubt فِيهِabout it وَلَـٰكِنَّBut أَكْثَرَmost ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the people لَا(do) not يَعْلَمُونَknow٢٦

[Prophet], say, ‘It is God who gives you life, then causes you to die, and then He gathers you all to the Day of Resurrection of which there is no doubt, though most people do not comprehend.’

وَلِلَّهِAnd for Allah مُلْكُ(is the) dominion ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚand the earth وَيَوْمَand (the) Day تَقُومُis established ٱلسَّاعَةُthe Hour يَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Day يَخْسَرُwill lose ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَthe falsifiers٢٧

Control of everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God. When the Hour comes, those who follow falsehood will be the losers on that Day.

وَتَرَىٰAnd you will see كُلَّevery أُمَّةٍۢnation جَاثِيَةًۭ ۚkneeling كُلُّEvery أُمَّةٍۢnation تُدْعَىٰٓwill be called إِلَىٰto كِتَـٰبِهَاits record ٱلْيَوْمَToday تُجْزَوْنَyou will be recompensed مَا(for) what كُنتُمْyou used to تَعْمَلُونَdo٢٨

You will see every community kneeling. Every community will be summoned to its record: ‘Today you will be repaid for what you did.

هَـٰذَاThis كِتَـٰبُنَاOur Record يَنطِقُspeaks عَلَيْكُمabout you بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚin truth إِنَّاIndeed, We كُنَّا[We] used to نَسْتَنسِخُtranscribe مَاwhat كُنتُمْyou used to تَعْمَلُونَdo٢٩

Here is Our record that tells the truth about you: We have been recording everything you do.’

فَأَمَّاThen as for ٱلَّذِينَthose who ءَامَنُوا۟believed وَعَمِلُوا۟and did ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ[the] righteous deeds فَيُدْخِلُهُمْwill admit them رَبُّهُمْtheir Lord فِىin(to)رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚHis mercy ذَٰلِكَThat هُوَ[it]ٱلْفَوْزُ(is) the success ٱلْمُبِينُclear٣٠

Those who believed and did good deeds will be admitted by their Lord into His mercy- that is the clearest triumph-

وَأَمَّاBut as for ٱلَّذِينَthose who كَفَرُوٓا۟disbelieved أَفَلَمْThen were not تَكُنْThen were not ءَايَـٰتِىMy Verses تُتْلَىٰrecited عَلَيْكُمْto you فَٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْbut you were proud وَكُنتُمْand you became قَوْمًۭاa people مُّجْرِمِينَcriminals٣١

but those who disbelieved [will be asked]: ‘When My revelations were recited to you, were you not arrogant and persistent in wicked deeds?

When it was said to you, “God’s promise is true: there is no doubt about the Hour,” did you not reply, “We know nothing of the Hour. This is only conjecture in our opinion. We are not convinced”?’

وَبَدَاAnd (will) appear لَهُمْto them سَيِّـَٔاتُ(the) evil مَا(of) what عَمِلُوا۟they did وَحَاقَand (will) envelop بِهِمthem مَّاwhat كَانُوا۟they used بِهِۦ[at it]يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ(to) mock٣٣

The evil of their actions will [then] become clear to them. The punishment they mocked will engulf them.

وَقِيلَAnd it will be said ٱلْيَوْمَToday نَنسَىٰكُمْWe forget you كَمَاas نَسِيتُمْyou forgot لِقَآءَ(the) meeting يَوْمِكُمْ(of) this Day of yours هَـٰذَا(of) this Day of yours وَمَأْوَىٰكُمُand your abode ٱلنَّارُ(is) the Fire وَمَاand not لَكُمfor you مِّنany نَّـٰصِرِينَhelpers٣٤

It will be said, ‘Today We shall ignore you just as you ignored your appointment with this Day. The Fire will be your home and no one will help you,

ذَٰلِكُمThat بِأَنَّكُمُ(is) because you ٱتَّخَذْتُمْtook ءَايَـٰتِ(the) Verses ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah هُزُوًۭا(in) ridicule وَغَرَّتْكُمُand deceived you ٱلْحَيَوٰةُthe life ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ(of) the world فَٱلْيَوْمَSo this Day لَاnot يُخْرَجُونَthey will be brought forth مِنْهَاfrom it وَلَاand not هُمْthey يُسْتَعْتَبُونَwill be asked to appease٣٥

because you received God’s revelations with ridicule and were deceived by worldly life.’ They will not be brought out of the Fire on that Day, nor will they be given the chance to make amends.

فَلِلَّهِThen for Allah ٱلْحَمْدُ(is) all the praise رَبِّ(the) Lord ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavens وَرَبِّand (the) Lord ٱلْأَرْضِ(of) the earth رَبِّ(the) lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds٣٦

So praise be to God, Lord of the heavens and earth, Lord of the worlds.

وَلَهُAnd for Him ٱلْكِبْرِيَآءُ(is) the greatness فِىin ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖand the earth وَهُوَand He ٱلْعَزِيزُ(is) the All-Mighty ٱلْحَكِيمُthe All-Wise٣٧

True greatness in the heavens and the earth is rightfully His: He is the Mighty, the Wise.
