He Frowned - 42 Ayats - makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

عَبَسَHe frowned وَتَوَلَّىٰٓand turned away١

He frowned and turned away

أَنBecause جَآءَهُcame to him ٱلْأَعْمَىٰthe blind man٢

when the blind man came to him––

وَمَاBut what يُدْرِيكَwould make you know لَعَلَّهُۥthat he might يَزَّكَّىٰٓpurify himself٣

for all you know, he might have grown in spirit,

أَوْOr يَذَّكَّرُbe reminded فَتَنفَعَهُso would benefit him ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓthe reminder٤

or taken note of something useful to him.

أَمَّاAs for مَنِ(him) who ٱسْتَغْنَىٰconsiders himself free from need٥

For the self-satisfied one

فَأَنتَSo you لَهُۥto him تَصَدَّىٰgive attention٦

you go out of your way––

وَمَاAnd not عَلَيْكَupon you أَلَّاthat not يَزَّكَّىٰhe purifies himself٧

though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––

وَأَمَّاBut as for مَن(he) who جَآءَكَcame to you يَسْعَىٰstriving٨

but from the one who has come to you full of eagerness

وَهُوَWhile he يَخْشَىٰfears٩

and awe

فَأَنتَBut you عَنْهُfrom him تَلَهَّىٰ(are) distracted١٠

you allow yourself to be distracted.

كَلَّآNay إِنَّهَاIndeed, it تَذْكِرَةٌۭ(is) a reminder١١

No indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson

فَمَنSo whosoever شَآءَwills ذَكَرَهُۥmay remember it١٢

from which those who wish to be taught should learn,

فِىIn صُحُفٍۢsheets مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢhonored١٣

[written] on honoured,

مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢExalted مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭpurified١٤

exalted, pure pages,

بِأَيْدِىIn (the) hands سَفَرَةٍۢ(of) scribes١٥

by the hands of

كِرَامٍۭNoble بَرَرَةٍۢdutiful١٦

noble and virtuous scribes.

قُتِلَIs destroyed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ[the] man مَآhow أَكْفَرَهُۥungrateful is he١٧

Woe to man! How ungrateful he is!

مِنْFrom أَىِّwhat شَىْءٍthing خَلَقَهُۥHe created him١٨

From what thing does God create him?

مِنFrom نُّطْفَةٍa semen-drop خَلَقَهُۥHe created him فَقَدَّرَهُۥthen He proportioned him١٩

He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him,

ثُمَّThen ٱلسَّبِيلَthe way يَسَّرَهُۥHe made easy for him٢٠

He makes the way easy for him,

ثُمَّThen أَمَاتَهُۥHe causes him to die فَأَقْبَرَهُۥand provides a grave for him٢١

then He causes him to die and be buried.

ثُمَّThen إِذَاwhen شَآءَHe wills أَنشَرَهُۥHe will resurrect him٢٢

When He wills, He will raise him up again.

كَلَّاNay لَمَّاNot يَقْضِhe has accomplished مَآwhat أَمَرَهُۥHe commanded him٢٣

Yet man does not fulfil God’s commands.

فَلْيَنظُرِThen let look ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُthe man إِلَىٰat طَعَامِهِۦٓhis food٢٤

Let man consider the food he eats!

اَنَّاThat [We]صَبَبْنَا[We] poured ٱلْمَآءَthe water صَبًّۭا(in) abundance٢٥

We pour down abundant water

ثُمَّThen شَقَقْنَاWe cleaved ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth شَقًّۭاsplitting٢٦

and cause the soil to split open.

فَأَنۢبَتْنَاThen We caused to grow فِيهَاtherein حَبًّۭاgrain٢٧

We make grain grow,

وَعِنَبًۭاAnd grapes وَقَضْبًۭاand green fodder٢٨

and vines, fresh vegetation,

وَزَيْتُونًۭاAnd olive وَنَخْلًۭاand date-palms٢٩

olive trees, date palms,

وَحَدَآئِقَAnd gardens غُلْبًۭا(of) thick foliage٣٠

luscious gardens,

وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭAnd fruits وَأَبًّۭاand grass٣١

fruits, and fodder:

مَّتَـٰعًۭا(As) a provision لَّكُمْfor you وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْand for your cattle٣٢

all for you and your livestock to enjoy.

فَإِذَاBut when جَآءَتِcomes ٱلصَّآخَّةُthe Deafening Blast٣٣

When the Deafening Blast comes––

يَوْمَ(The) Day يَفِرُّwill flee ٱلْمَرْءُa man مِنْfrom أَخِيهِhis brother٣٤

the Day man will flee from his own brother,

وَأُمِّهِۦAnd his mother وَأَبِيهِand his father٣٥

his mother, his father,

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦAnd his wife وَبَنِيهِand his children٣٦

his wife, his children:

لِكُلِّFor every ٱمْرِئٍۢman مِّنْهُمْamong them يَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Day شَأْنٌۭ(will be) a matter يُغْنِيهِoccupying him٣٧

each of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day-

وُجُوهٌۭFaces يَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Day مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ(will be) bright٣٨

on that Day some faces will be beaming,

ضَاحِكَةٌۭLaughing مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭrejoicing at good news٣٩

laughing, and rejoicing,

وَوُجُوهٌۭAnd faces يَوْمَئِذٍthat Day عَلَيْهَاupon them غَبَرَةٌۭ(will be) dust٤٠

but some faces will be dust-stained

تَرْهَقُهَاWill cover them قَتَرَةٌdarkness٤١

and covered in darkness:

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose هُمُ[they]ٱلْكَفَرَةُ(are) the disbelievers ٱلْفَجَرَةُthe wicked ones٤٢

those are the disbelievers, the licentious.
