العلق

Al-'Alaq

The Clot - 19 Ayats - makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1

ٱقْرَأْRead بِٱسْمِin (the) name رَبِّكَ(of) your Lord ٱلَّذِىthe One Who خَلَقَcreated ١

Read! In the name of your Lord who created:

2

خَلَقَHe created ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman مِنْfrom عَلَقٍa clinging substance٢

He created manfrom a clinging form.

3

ٱقْرَأْRead وَرَبُّكَand your Lord ٱلْأَكْرَمُ(is) the Most Generous٣

Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One

4

ٱلَّذِىThe One Who عَلَّمَtaught بِٱلْقَلَمِby the pen٤

who taught by [means of] the pen,

5

عَلَّمَTaught ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman مَاwhat لَمْnot يَعْلَمْhe knew٥

who taught man what he did not know.

6

كَلَّآNay إِنَّIndeed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman لَيَطْغَىٰٓsurely transgresses٦

But man exceeds all bounds

7

أَنThat رَّءَاهُhe sees himself ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓself-sufficient٧

when he thinks he is self-sufficient:

8

إِنَّIndeed إِلَىٰto رَبِّكَyour Lord ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ(is) the return٨

[Prophet], all will return to your Lord.

9

أَرَءَيْتَHave you seen ٱلَّذِىthe one who يَنْهَىٰforbids٩

Have you seen the man who forbids

10

عَبْدًاA slave إِذَاwhen صَلَّىٰٓhe prays١٠

[Our] servant to pray?

11

أَرَءَيْتَHave you seen إِنif كَانَhe is عَلَىupon ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ[the] guidance١١

Have you seen whether he is rightly guided,

12

أَوْOr أَمَرَhe enjoins بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ[of the] righteousness١٢

or encourages true piety?

13

أَرَءَيْتَHave you seen إِنif كَذَّبَhe denies وَتَوَلَّىٰٓand turns away١٣

Have you seen whether he denies the truth and turns away from it?

14

أَلَمْDoes not يَعْلَمhe know بِأَنَّthat ٱللَّهَAllah يَرَىٰsees١٤

Does he not realize that God sees all?

15

كَلَّاNay لَئِنIf لَّمْnot يَنتَهِhe desists لَنَسْفَعًۢاsurely We will drag him بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِby the forelock١٥

No! If he does not stop, We shall drag him by his forehead––

16

نَاصِيَةٍۢA forelock كَـٰذِبَةٍlying خَاطِئَةٍۢsinful١٦

his lying, sinful forehead.

17

فَلْيَدْعُThen let him call نَادِيَهُۥhis associates١٧

Let him summon his comrades;

18

سَنَدْعُWe will call ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَthe Angels of Hell١٨

We shall summon the guards of Hell.

19

كَلَّاNay لَا(Do) not تُطِعْهُobey him وَٱسْجُدْBut prostrate وَٱقْتَرِب ۩and draw near (to Allah)١٩

No! Do not obey him [Prophet]: bow down in worship and draw close.
