The Sundering - 25 Ayats - makkah

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

إِذَاWhen ٱلسَّمَآءُthe sky ٱنشَقَّتْis split asunder١

When the sky is ripped apart,

وَأَذِنَتْAnd has listened لِرَبِّهَاto its Lord وَحُقَّتْand was obligated٢

obeying its Lord as it rightly must,

وَإِذَاAnd when ٱلْأَرْضُthe earth مُدَّتْis spread٣

when the earth is levelled out,

وَأَلْقَتْAnd has cast out مَاwhat فِيهَا(is) in it وَتَخَلَّتْand becomes empty٤

casts out its contents, and becomes empty,

وَأَذِنَتْAnd has listened لِرَبِّهَاto its Lord وَحُقَّتْand was obligated٥

obeying its Lord as it rightly must,

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُmankind إِنَّكَIndeed, you كَادِحٌ(are) laboring إِلَىٰto رَبِّكَyour Lord كَدْحًۭا(with) exertion فَمُلَـٰقِيهِand you (will) meet Him٦

you humans, toiling laboriously towards your Lord, will meet Him:

فَأَمَّاThen as for مَنْ(him) who أُوتِىَis given كِتَـٰبَهُۥhis record بِيَمِينِهِۦin his right (hand)٧

whoever is given his record in his right hand

فَسَوْفَThen soon يُحَاسَبُhis account will be taken حِسَابًۭاan account يَسِيرًۭاeasy٨

will have an easy reckoning

وَيَنقَلِبُAnd he will return إِلَىٰٓto أَهْلِهِۦhis people مَسْرُورًۭاhappily٩

and return to his people well pleased,

وَأَمَّاBut as for مَنْ(him) who أُوتِىَis given كِتَـٰبَهُۥhis record وَرَآءَbehind ظَهْرِهِۦhis back١٠

but whoever is given his record from behind his back

فَسَوْفَThen soon يَدْعُوا۟he will call ثُبُورًۭا(for) destruction١١

will cry out for destruction––

وَيَصْلَىٰAnd he will burn سَعِيرًا(in) a Blaze١٢

he will burn in the blazing Fire.

إِنَّهُۥIndeed, he كَانَhad been فِىٓamong أَهْلِهِۦhis people مَسْرُورًاhappy١٣

He used to live among his people well pleased.

إِنَّهُۥIndeed, he ظَنَّ(had) thought أَنthat لَّنnever يَحُورَhe would return١٤

He thought he would never return [to his Lord]––

بَلَىٰٓYes إِنَّIndeed رَبَّهُۥhis Lord كَانَwas بِهِۦof him بَصِيرًۭاAll-Seer١٥

indeed he will! His Lord was watching him.

فَلَآBut nay أُقْسِمُI swear بِٱلشَّفَقِby the twilight glow١٦

I swear by the glow of sunset,

وَٱلَّيْلِAnd the night وَمَاand what وَسَقَit envelops١٧

by the night and what it covers,

وَٱلْقَمَرِAnd the moon إِذَاwhen ٱتَّسَقَit becomes full١٨

by the full moon,

لَتَرْكَبُنَّYou will surely embark طَبَقًا(to) stage عَنfrom طَبَقٍۢstage١٩

you will progress from stage to stage.

فَمَاSo what لَهُمْ(is) for them لَاnot يُؤْمِنُونَthey believe٢٠

So why do they not believe?

وَإِذَاAnd when قُرِئَis recited عَلَيْهِمُto them ٱلْقُرْءَانُthe Quran لَاnot يَسْجُدُونَ ۩they prostrate٢١

Why, when the Quran is read to them, do they not prostrate themselves [to God]?

بَلِNay ٱلَّذِينَThose who كَفَرُوا۟disbelieved يُكَذِّبُونَdeny٢٢

No! The disbelievers reject the Quran––

وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah أَعْلَمُ(is) most knowing بِمَاof what يُوعُونَthey keep within themselves٢٣

God knows best what they keep hidden inside––

فَبَشِّرْهُمso give them tidings بِعَذَابٍof a punishment أَلِيمٍpainful٢٤

so give them news of a painful torment.

إِلَّاExcept ٱلَّذِينَthose who ءَامَنُوا۟believe وَعَمِلُوا۟and do ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deeds لَهُمْFor them أَجْرٌ(is) a reward غَيْرُnever مَمْنُونٍۭending٢٥

But those who believe and do good deeds will have a never-ending reward.
